Gone is the time where I pre-judge people who get nicked for speeding. Days gone by you would hear of someone getting a ticket for speeding in a 40 limit for example and I used to think good, flipping madness, think of the kittens, not playing by the rules (unwritten or otherwise). Now my first thought would be - I bet it's a stupid recently imposed limit.

Gave up on France bikey wise 4 or 5 years ago, writing's been on the wall for a while. Got one more trip in the car this year before giving that up too.

Not sure I know that feeling.
But back on topic. Having travelled 20,000 miles to and from the U.K. and our place in France during the last 18 months, I fail to see how one should be caught speeding on the very well signposted routes which seem to catch you out. So much advanced warning of speed cameras etc, to miss them is just plain stupid.

But back on topic. Having travelled 20,000 miles to and from the U.K. and our place in France during the last 18 months, I fail to see how one should be caught speeding on the very well signposted routes which seem to catch you out. Your naivety typifies that of those that do what they are told regardless of whether it is justified.
I have never been caught by a fixed camera, always by mobile units. And anyone that trots out some nonsense about how you deserve it if you were so unobservant so as not to see them first ( "You shouldn't be on the road, you are a liability"etc) is just demonstrating that they never go fast enough to know what they are talking about. If I obeyed all the speed limits then I would see all the mobile units 'in time', but 'in time' would be irrelevant as I wouldn't need to see them in the first place.

The bare facts are that doing 120mph down an Autoroute is of no great consequence, and not so long back 100 was entirely routine and nobody cared, Nothing much has changed bar the fact we are now expected to believe it really is an issue.

I would guess that they're

A - a bit of a Francophile (bit like myself)
B - experienced driver / rider in France (bit like myself)
C - never been nicked there (bit like myself)
D - a bit smug about 'C'

I wouldn't ignore the fact the French authorities are using a very blunt approach to speeding and assume that you haven't been pulled yet is all down to your Zen like 6th sense. Also there's a big difference holidaying on unexplored roads to a regular fortnightly run down to a holiday home.

All very true. I haven’t been caught but as the saying goes ‘there but for the grace of God’ (and my Road Angel).

Seriously particularly in France the police are sneaky sods and the traps can be very well hidden. Last year I saw the policeman hiding in a bush next to the motorway, Mrs BC was driving. Sure enough at the next toll booth there were plenty of police waiting to relieve motorists of their cash.

It's double the number of deaths on UK roads.

Cause vs effect. If you reduce speed, everything else involved in a collision (carelessness, distraction, prohibited manoeuvre) therefore involves less energy and should result in a better chance of a better outcome, i.e. living instead of dying. Accepted, it's a crude tool.

Entirely plausible in theory.

They claim the drivers of these vehicles will just follow pre-determined routes and have no additional incentivisation on numbers caught. But it is a private company, no doubt with shareholders, so whatever they claim at ground level to placate the objections, those at the top will be getting bonuses for a higher number of convictions.

Usual lies, BS and misrepresentation will apply.

Now we have plenty of shiny fixed cameras in Lux too. My wife, one of the world's slower drivers has two fines to prove it. In my experience mostly sited to raise cash rather than prevent accidents.

A replacement driving license from DVLA is also a good bet. That way you give French police the old one if required and carry on driving legally once you cross a border on the new version.
