What’s happened to bike prices? Stepped away from biking after my previous R1 went to bike heaven about 8 years ago. At the time I’m pretty sure an R1/gsxr etc was around 10k. Now I get an ad on Facebook, click through and see new gsxr is almost 17k. Insane - who buys these new? Surely this puts the litre bike out of range of most as a toy/weekend thing or has it all gone lease deals like cars?

Lease deals have allowed the prices to go up when the features do. The amount of technology and development in the modern litre bike is insane now.

Completely stupid prices fuelled by incremental addition of features nobody needs. Engine modes... fk off.

And stratospheric levels of performance that may not be any use either.

That's been true for 25 years though, when was the last litre sports bike that you could absolutely use the performance on the road in anything but a short squirt?

Engine modes do seem a bit much, but I can also imagine a rain mode being quite useful to gentle the throttle response, it means the dry one can be more aggressive.

Things like quick shifters, cornering ABS etc have also come in don't forget.

Don't know about the rest of the UK but try insuring a new bike in London when you tell the broker it cost more than £10k.

I did have issues when I got my new R1 last year, four months after writing off a new Merc and 3 years after getting the previous R1 stolen and I ended up with a whopping £880 premium; I've never paid that in my life.

This year it's a much more palatable, although still insane, £500.
To put this into perspective - the OHs R1 (with me as a named rider) is a 1999 model and is £100 fully comp.

I remember the mid 90's Blades costing about £9500 then the "grey import" thing kicked off & prices came down. I bought a new R1 in 2000 for £7000. Prices have steadily increased over the years I suppose. Nowadays the bikes are fully laden with tech, how much actual use it is, I'm not sure but the horsepower arms race has seen fit that bikes probably need the sophisticated rider aids to stop them being high sided into oblivion. This all costs to develop & manufacture. Cheap PCP deals etc also drive the RRP, it's all about the monthlies, new GSXR1000 for £199 a month, S1000RR about the same.

May I ask if you garage them? I have a gated car park outside my flat and can't get anyone to quote on anything sporty and newish.

Apart from good ol MCE who seem to have a bad rep but useful if you just need a piece of paper to show the police.

Not a company I'd like to chance if I have £10k sitting out on the streets tho.

This thread seems to be full of Honda Jazz drivers and Deauville riders.

Bikes go up in price shocker! Most things go up in price a lot and it has bugger all to do with PCP, despite the snobs on here claiming it is. Sportsbikes had a list price of £9000 from the moment they were launched until 2008 when the world went into financial meltdown. Since then they’ve risen in price, initially they had a big jump to c£13-15000, then they’ve steadily risen since, more or less in line with inflation. The big jump was a one off market adjustment that was probably needed, but was a surprise.

Why people are amazed about prices a decade on is beyond me and quite bizarre.

  • Very* securely garaged (my previous R1 was stolen, not something I ever want to experience again). No matter where I lived I'd not keep a motorbike or car worth more than a couple of K outside.

Yep, economics. Can't believe the massive increases since I last had bikes. The cost of a brand new bike 15 years ago is now the cost of a 3 year old bike! Or thereabouts.

A new R1 was 9k in 1998, they were 9k in 2004, they were 8k in 2007, 10.5k in 2009 and then 15k in 2015

Things go up in price.
