Well that was a near miss
Discussion
After 30 odd years in the saddle I've developed my own brand of defensive riding and when the traffic stops I always filter to the front so that so if someone behind fails to stop I'm not the one that gets rear-ended.
Well, it stood me in good stead today: As I filtered past the end car, white van man behind me slammed straight into the back of it. I stopped to help and the damage and injuries were significant.
Good job I didn't stop at the end of that queue – I'd have been squished. As it stood, my only damage was to my underwear! I reckon that's the closest I've ever been to a crash without actually being in one. Methinks that alcohol may be consumed later.
Bikers... Be careful out there.

Close one, well done. I also get away from being the last in line, if I cant get to the front (in London road captains ,and small penis RR drivers seem to take offence) I'm in between stationary cars as far from the rear as I can get.
Another tip for myself, if at the front at red lights and cars approaching, I remain in gear until the car has stopped behind me so I can get the hell out of the way if I feel they may not stop, sometimes I tap my brake repeatably to ensure they see me.

Don't have a choice where filtering isn't allowed. (Canada)
It's only illegal if you get caught.Bob_Defly said:

Never never never sit behind another car.
Should be the Golden Rule.I do not stand behind cars either, especially now when it is dark morning and evening.
It's just common sense, just once look in rear mirrors and see that car coming and the survival instinct kicks right in.
