You would have thought they would sit there eating donuts until the scrote turned up...especially when they say it might not be there long.

Just to recap then.

Police find stolen bike.
Do not recover it
Wait 24 hours before informing owner
Bike is moved/stolen again

In what other world would the police not be considered wholly negligent for this?

On the plus side, they are saving the world by making sure people do not exceed the speed limit

The OP didn't pay for Police recovery this is their reasoning lol - he doesn't remember being asked about this which surprises me because that all they were punting me as they offered me a crime number for my stolen bike in 2005. At the time would I like to pay £125 on the off chance it was found and then it would be recovered to me - errr no because it was a GSXR600 and there was no way it was ever coming back which was 100% the correct thing to do.

Amazingly the OP would have stood more chance of getting done for going to recover it himself has it still been there with the key through having no insurance/tax etc.. the irony

Maybe it was a cunning plan by plod to get an easy bust by fitting me up hehe

Unfortunately thwarted by the thief himself.

I just love the fact that they have let what is effectively a criminal's tool to go out and help commit more crime.

With 101's guidance I have submitted a complaint.

Doubt it'll go anywhere though.
Did you say yes to the recovery scheme? If you didn't, then it won't normally get recovered, as it costs the Police money, money which they no longer get back. Recovery companies want to get paid, we used to recover all stolen vehicles and then try and claim it back through insurance companies, that doesn't happen now (I'm guessing the insurance companies decided they didn't want to pay?)

Someone has to cover the costs. Its crap that your bike has gone again, but I'm guessing you've been paid out by now?

No payout as I didn't claim. As police said as it was obviously being used in criminal activities with a false plate it should have been impounded as evidence by the officers at the scene.

Recovery certainly was not offered to me at time of theft.

Got a call last night from the police. Vespa has been found again and is in a police pound.

They want me at the station today to make a statement as the pc on the phone said that they are building a case against the guy who had it. Said it's part of a crackdown on moped gangs.

So once forensics have finished I can have it back.

I wonder what state it is in?

It's a Vespa.

A quick service and it will be fine.

Hope so. I'd expect the ignition barrel to be missing.

I chucked the keys a few months ago anyway.

I wonder if my expensive helmet and gloves are still in the top box hehe

Yes you'll be able to reclaim it, but you'll be liable for the £150 recovery fee.

Yeah, the police have warned me about those costs plus it sounds like it's currently unrideable due to ignition barrel missing and no plates so it's probably best I get a van, get it home and then work out what to do with it.

It's not just the case of buying a new barrel as it may need a new ECU to talk to keys.

Begs the question, how do the thieves bypass the immobiliser? What is the point of this expensive addition?

Nice that it's been found!

Now, about the CBR600 that was in the French racing series .... we're still waiting for the rest of the story. smile

Years ago my wife lived in Birmingham and had her Metro stolen, the Police called and told her it had been found and where it wasaround 10 miles away, when she got there it had gone. A few hours later they called again and told her it had been found again two streets away. They'd looked through her CD collection and left them all there.

If it was reclaimed for forensic evidence then the cost should be covered by the Polce not you.

The PC has said that I shouldn't be liable for recovery costs.

Incorrect, with recovered vehicles that have been reported as stolen, the owner is liable for the recovery cost.

Only vehicles recovered under PACE (police and criminal evidence act) are the police liable to pick up the cost of the recovery.

what pisses me off is it could just be chucked in the back of a police van,

but no due to policy it must be recovered by a recovery company.

Anyone see that police interceptor when they got a recovery truck for a mini moped!.

Could have stuck it in the bloody boot !!
