Could probably do it myself, but didn't fancy buying the VVT cam locking tools for one job. Job was £430 earlier this year, but they reckon they weren't making any money on that, so now it's £540 yikes. So retail, Gates belt/waterpump kit=Under £100, some coolant =£20, ancillary belts= £20. + £400 for a job that would take 2-3 hours tops. Maybe Ford need the money to cover all their Focus RS and 3 cylinder bodges.

Have you ever done one on one of those?

It's either not a three hour job or your mechanic is mugging you off on labour.

Is this a Ford dealer? If so, it's about what I'd expect given main dealer labour is generally over £100+VAT an hour.

You don't mention which engine you have, but I reckon you'd knock about £200 off that price by using an independent garage and there would be no difference in the quality of the job.

It's a 1.6 petrol Zetec. This price was direct from Ford customer service, and an indy is £150 cheaper. I've done DOHC cambelts in the past, but it being VVT means you have to lock the crank and cam pulleys.

If it's at a Ford dealer I doubt they'll be using a Gates kit and water pump, they'll be using the genuine Ford bits. They will probably be somewhat more expensive than after market Gates bits.

Maybe Ford have slightly higher overheads than you. How many staff do you have again?

I don't recall introducing the subject of my overheads, or staff?

So what's the issue? You begrudge a business making money?

Think yourself lucky. I was quoted £1200 for a full service Inc timing belt and water pump on a 2013 Twingo RS133 earlier from an independent. hehe

Sounds like it.

I wonder what OP does for a living.
I wonder how much he feels HIS time and effort is worth?

I bet I can find someone to do it even better and cheaper

hehe

Thanks for the offer, but I'm miles away. These are the tools required.

I had a service and a cam-belt change on a 2000 Seat Leon Cupra back in 2004 that cost about £660!

Which is why I've only had BMWs with a cam-chain since then. laugh

Hi yes the only extra part is the tool to lock the variable pulleys but you can do it without if your belt hasn't snapped just by using tippex/ paint and the crank pin . ive done 100s over the years and nice quick job to do .
