I’m looking at this sector of bike as my first big bike. One of the ones I’m considering is the BMW F800R Sport. There are some cracking deals around at the moment, especially on almost new ones. I’ll be commuting, and they’ll take a top box and luggage. Just wondering what people’s view is; especially those who have had one.

I’ve had two, both from new and for three years each.

I used them mainly for commuting and they are fantastic in that role.

The only negative is that the finish is not that great.

Don’t get the BMW topbox though, it’s very expensive and has a tiny 28l capacity due to being double-skinned. Get the Givi adaptor plate fitted to the BMW rack and get a Givi V47 or something like that.

Duke 790. Great little bike and a winner over the MT which is chastised for it's suspension.
And getting quite close to 5k now, great buy for that money
Good ones are around £5.5k and you can pick ones up with 8-10k miles around around £4.5k to £5k. Its a bit of a gamble in terms of reliability - some are Ok and some are very bad. I bought one, as it reminded me so much of the original street triple.

I have hardly done any miles but with beauty in the eye of the beholder and all that, I do like it.

As others have mentioned the 675's are great (had that as well) but just really like twins.

That’s useful info thanks. I’m trying to go with my head and not just jump for the Street Triple that my heart desires!

Street Triple will be more fun, but if you’re using it mainly for commuting the downside is it’s much more attractive to thieves, so not recommended unless you’ve got very secure parking.

The F800R is a very decent bike in its own right. The parallel twin engine gives it lots of torque, the handling is good and the brakes are fantastic.

Cheers. Parking isn’t an issue as we do have very secure underground parking at my building. But I’ll need a top box and it’s a right faff to get one on a Street Triple and spoils the look of it a bit. You’re right though, it will be more fun! Decisions decisions.
