Thanks all
I actually did have to do one when I got back to the bike school. I just went forward under power and then duck-walked it back. So much easier and without the jepody
Good luck for Tuesday

The best bit is that you'll probably never need to perform another U-turn again!

Brilliant news..what bike are you waiting on
Triumph Trident 660. Should make a nice bike to learn the ropes on.ghibbett said:
Hi All.
Bit of an update: although this thread is about Mod 1, which I managed third time lucky last week, this morning I had my Mod 2.
The weather was, erm, interesting. Below zero, then sleeting, which covered my visor in rain, which then froze (!), however I was happy with how the test went and felt confident I'd passed. And my confidence was not mis-placed - I passed with zero minors.
Super chuffed with the result . Perhaps made better following on from the 2 x Mod 1 disappointments.
Anyway beer tonight and then the annoying wait until my bike is ready come mid-April.
Ride safe all
Congratulations, zero minors great result especially given the weather and the Mod 1 hiccups.Bit of an update: although this thread is about Mod 1, which I managed third time lucky last week, this morning I had my Mod 2.

Maybe the terrible weather played into your favour by giving you something else to think about instead of being nervous about your riding and the test.
Hope you enjoy the Trident, should be a great first bike, have two Triumphs myself but looking at the weather it may be mid-April for me as well at this rate
Best of luck for your Mod 1 today
I expect you'll enjoy the ride there and back (Mod 2 training). I certainly did and, personally, was much more comfortable on the road than the paddock (for Mod 1). Get used to the road riding with the instructor behind issuing directions - that's exactly what your Mod 2 test will be like.
From my end, having passed on Weds last week, I was pleasantly surprised to receive my updated licence in the post on Saturday morning. Great turn-around from the DVLA. I then promptly booked a test ride of a Triumph Trident for this Friday. Gotta test what I've ordered! (Also, it'll be the first time out on a bike alone - eeek!).

Good luck mate, enjoy yourself! Fingers crossed you like it. Brave to order without even testing it first.tinhead said:

I was always more confident about Mod 2 and just being on the road. I think I just got myself into a place of unnecessary anxiousness when it came to Mod 1.

Thank you. Yes it's a strange situation; when I passed my driving test, the premise of ordering a new car was totally alien. However now, 26 years later, and with the relative cost of bikes, it's an odd situation when you can afford a new bike but can't actually test ride one! I could of course have waited until I passed, but my concern was that there'd be a 6 month lead time after passing and I'd miss the Summer without a bike.
Bit of a gamble, but if I don't get along with it, I can sell up and try something else. However with practically zero experience of bikes, I can't imagine I'm going to test one and think the engine is crap, or the rear shock rebound characteristics don't suit me. I have zero reference point to begin with

I messed up mod 1 and really disappointed. It was the swerve, I was 2mph under on second go. It’s really odd as I was 57kph to 62 consistently in training, not once under. I think the open dunsfold Aerodrome vs the confined cage gave a different perception of speed. They are trying to book me in for mod 1 test on Thursday and mod 2 on Friday next week. No other issues on mod1 so it’s really annoying. I expect you'll enjoy the ride there and back (Mod 2 training). Was a good ride there and back apart from there were two trainees and we got separated at the lights, the last instructions I heard were "follow signs to camberley and frimley and ……." So I had a little solo riding until we met up again lol. Camberley was nice though.
Thanks to all the contributors to this thread.
I failed my first Mod 1 on the U Turn; my rear observation wasn’t clear enough. My fault.
Poor weather cancelled the next attempt but that was followed by a pass.
Two Mod 2s were then cancelled- weather again. However I passed with only a minor two weeks ago.
The experiences on this thread helped me to keep the faith.
If I can learn how to post a picture I will!
New ( to me) bike was dropped off last week and I have been out a few times.
Loving every minute!

Yes she’s big!
Taking it very steady at the moment.
I’d always thought I would progress through a few different bikes before ‘ending up’ on a GS. But I followed the advice of a few friends: but the bike you want/ the one that you will look back and smile at… so I did.
Got caught in a blizzard last Thursday. Frankly it was terrifying, luckily only a few miles from home. , just couldn’t resist taking her out.

The hazard avoidance was my nemesis too! It took me 3 attempts to pass Mod 1, and both times I failed it was on the hazard avoidance bit right at the end of the test!Much like you I had no issues with the test right up until this point. But on my first two Mod 1 attempts, I clipped the inside cone on the swerve.
My issue was target fixation. On the third attempt, I made a conscious effort not to fixate on the inside cone, instead focusing on the outer cone. If only I'd done that from the start!
I realise this isn't particularly helpful as your downfall was falling just shy of the minimum speed requirement. My instructor taught me to do 15mph (in third gear) round the end of the course, opening the throttle fully as you go through the first set of cones, then closing the throttle at the set of cones just before the speed trap, rolling through the speed trap itself. This worked a treat for me, but worth noting that this method was tailored to the bike that I was learning on.

Ah mate, sorry to hear that! As was said earlier in the thread, "it's an easy test to fail", which is so true. Was a good ride there and back apart from there were two trainees and we got separated at the lights, the last instructions I heard were "follow signs to camberley and frimley and ……." Yes it's this very thread that I turned too after failing Mod 1. Great contributions and they made me feel better about my (repeat!) failures!
Thanks all.
The funniest bit of the day was when "" being shouted came over the radio by the instructor. A kid on a twist and go scooter with no gloves or protection other than lid clipped the instructor on a roundabout (undertake) and then made off….the instructor was on a big gs and said he would have chased him if he was not with us.

Having read all the words of encouragement, I thought I’d share with the thread that I’ve got my MOD2 booked for Monday morning. My training has been disrupted with the bad weather so ended up having 4 hours on the bike yesterday for my final lesson. Looking forward to finally getting my license so fingers crossed I pass!

Personally, I much preferred MOD2 to MOD1. Don't be afraid to do more mirror checks than necessary, making them nice and obvious for the examiner! Best of luck!
Although I failed mod 1 I found the bike control quite easy. After 1 mornings training the instructor said I was ready. It was a silly error that made me fail. I am more worried about mod 2 after 25+ years of driving habits.
Bike arrives next week…that will spur me on.
Good luck with mod 2…report back please
