Been working through a snagging list.....

1. Slight oil leak on the cam cover, where the head was welded. Got.a very slight low spot on the gasket face so I’ve doubled up the gasket and put some high temp silicone in for good measure... re-checked the timing, cam chain tension and cam carrier bolts for correct torque whilst I was in there...

2. Next up was carbs. Had a pretty bad bog coming in to the midrange so Ive richened up the jetting a smidge, raised the needles, rechecked sync and float heights, and adjusted the accelerator pump - which as it turns out was being caused to stick open by the air filter rubbing against the plunger. All sorted now..... I’ve also fitted a push pull throttle so I can loosen off one of the two return springs - the throttle is heavy as hell otherwise ....

3. Working out where I can get an ignition pulse for the electronic rev counter.....

Paints ready today too........how exciting.

Been working through the jetting on the Mikuni flatsides. Unfortunately still not there..... but at least homing in on the right answer. Not easy to jet these Mikuni’s it seems. Going to have to get it on a Dyno I think....

In parallel I’m gradually putting the bodywork on and finishing all those little jobs that make the difference.

Front mudguard (think I’ve got the brake line clamps the wrong way round though)

Mounting the Motogadget M.Lock so that it sits flush behind the side panel, meaning the touch key can just be touched against the first zero on the KZ 1000 logo on the side panel to switch the ignition on and off. It has has phone proximity activated ignition on/off, using bluetooth, but its handy to have the touch on/off too.....

Coming together, ready for seat and seat unit next....notice the flatsides languishing on the shelf above - waiting for yet more jets to arrive in the post....

Got the proof of age certificate from Kawasaki showing Big Zed was manufactured in January 1980 so I’ve filled in the V122 form to get MoT exemption. Was actually manufactured and sold in the US, and privately imported here in 1983......

Ah yes, apologies....

So, the bike still isn’t finished. I wasn’t able to get the bike running properly tbh,... it just won’t rev cleanly through the range. So I’m still working through the potential issues.... plus I took a break to get my other bikes back on the road/ build a deck/ get the boat ready for summer etc.....

Here it is as it stands ....

Aesthetically, it’s exceeded my expectations, so I’m adamant the performance must match. The bike didn’t run when I bought it and since then I’ve rebuilt the top end, fitted a different head, completely rewired it and fitted RS34 flatsides. Probably the flatsides are just too big for a stock engine, but I’ve also had problems getting the cam timing set-up using the TDC timing marks on the ATU. The piston dwell is so long on these zed engines at TDC that it’s not easy to pinpoint TDC...

The plan is to dial in the cams using the old fashioned method of finding TDC using a positive stop tool and timing disc, and also fit a set of OE VM26 carbs that I’d bought some time and have cleaned up a bit...

Thanks

That 2K flat spot and bogging is exactly the issue I have with the RS34s. I wonder if the same principle can be applied.....

Hopefully, I’m not going to kick off a massive carb debate - seems to be one of the most hotly debated, yet clearly misunderstood, topics on the WWW

Time for an update. So after confirming that the cam timing is set up correctly for the umpteenth time, I swapped out the RS34’s for a set of VM28SS that would’ve been standard fitment to a Zed of this period and the bike runs much much better….. actually revving cleanly through the Rev range now…

Obviously the RS34s were just too big for the bog standard Zed engine.

42 year old carbs after 15 mins in the ultrasonic cleaner…..notice I junked the accelerator pump

Unfortunately we now need new filters and throttle cables….

Carbs on the bike now, new cables and DNA air filters…..

So that I don’t need to worry about the 40 year old electrics letting me down, I’ve fitted new Dyna coils and Taylor leads. Bit of tight fit in there for the coils….

I also managed to track down a NOS igniter… for bargain price too.

Had a little test ride…few niggles but nothing major. Rides really nice, I’m pleasantly surprised… wasn’t sure how a bike based on a 40+ year old frame and engine was going to feel….

I hereby bring this post to an end, thanks for all your kind words…
