It was mentioned early in the thread - but have you considered a TDM900?

Absolutely untouchable for what you need and at this price point. A few very minor niggles (easily sorted) and it will serve you well for years. I've had 5 of them over then years and have covered 100's of thousands of miles (I kid you not as I do 500 miles a week commute on one).

Such an underrated bike. Every year I think to myself 'I should go for something newer', but have yet to find anything that can trump it. 230mile range, comfortable, generally reliable (HT leads short unless wrapped mind, ignition barrels can wear, stator tends to go about 60k miles, but that's it) and cheap!

Have you looked at a Royal Enfield Himalayan? Can get an almost new one within your budget, cheap and cheerful. Very easy to work on and cheap for parts. Might be a bit underpowered but depends what you're after.
