Thanks for the replies chaps, and the advice.

Hiccy, I put that into the MOT database, says it’s been off the road for years.

Pin lock - yes, thanks for the reminder will ensure it’s there.

Audio - I definitely want some of this, but don’t understand, how the hell do you hear anything over the wind noise, even with ear plugs ??
Get some ear plugs and try out the audio. You can hear it no problem.

Riding without ear plugs is not recommended. It is loud enough that you will lose your hearing over time.

Confused, not sure what you put into the MOT database?

An alternative to earplugs and speakers is to use earbuds but there's not many that will provide a sufficient cut in background noise to protect your hearing. Sennheiser CX300's worked for me but several others cheaper and more expensive did not and I'd be left with ringing in my ears after relatively short journeys.

Yep, mate of mine has been riding a few years and has only just started using ear plugs. This is due to the fact he's developed tinnitus, not good!

Different lids have very different acoustics.

I went with Schuberth because they were one of the quietest on the market at the time and I still used ear plugs. It's no fun finishing a commute with ringing in your ears.

Don't use earbuds whilst riding - you will have to have the music really loud so you can hear it over the wind noise which will damage your ears.

If the wind noise is THAT LOAD then you really need to get a new, quieter helmet.

Good speakers mounted directly over the ears (and a few mm out can make a big difference) can be heard easily, even with earplugs in, without the requirement for the volume to be significant.

An exception to that are in earbuds that may also have noise cancelling so you have them lower volumes.

A lot of people buy a 500-650cc bike as their first full licence bike, then sell it after awhile. Myself included.

Just save yourself the trouble and buy a 800-1200cc from the off.
Isn’t the progressive approach considerably safer when starting out ?
I would say so and I have read that it makes you a better rider. Also you get to ride more bikes as you work your way up.
There is no evidence that working your way up makes you a better rider. For a start, there is no definition of "a better rider" for the road beyond the accident rate and as has been said, the accident rate shows that there is no correlation between bhp/cc and likelihood of n accident.

Buy what you want, remembering that the limiting factor of any bike (mid-range and upwards) to a new rider is the rider, not the bike.

My first bike after passing was a Monster 821. Was comfortable on it from day 1. Never felt bored of it like I think I would have on a smaller bike.

I was just being silly; the helmet you referenced looks uncannily like an old reg number.

My current helmet is a bit of a cheapy and probably getting on for 10 years old, no pin lock either. Suspect trying on lids in a shop is off the cards these days... does anyone know?

I bought a new helmet 18/4 which I was able to try on first. The shop had disposable balaclavas for customers to use.

Got an email from Infinity yesterday to say the same, they provide balaclavas to allow helmet fitting. smile
