"Prior to 1st October 2002, standing around with the bike parked up looking innocent with a 'pants' alibi would have seen the officers disappear knowing they couldn't prove anything"

i dont know if any of you guys read my thread about my speeding incident i have just been told by my wife that her friends (she is a wpc gwent police) boyfriend (he is gwent police dog unit) was on his way to a training course (psu training or something) and he was late so he speeded up he was eventually caught (in a police dog van no lights no tones) doing 111mph up the a449 it was a marked van (saftey camera unit ) of course it being a police car they contacted the staion to find out who the car was registered to, found out who was driving and then contacted him he gave the excuse that he was late for his training course and after a week he was told not to worry about it he is being let off, also this guy had about 3 years ago been driving through blackwood and run over an elderly man (with alzheimers) and killed him he didnt even realise he had run somebody over until he go out he got 3 points and a fine now when you hear this kind of bullshit it makes me feel bloody sick cops looking after one another eh

All I can say is that Gwent Police have a hugely different Policy on dealing with that type of incident than the force I work for.

If you cannot provide a hard copy of a job that is recorded as either immedite or priority attendance from the control room log ind you are in a police vehicle, regardless of marked or unmarked, you are prosecuted. It is up to the individual officer to fight his own corner with the particular defence he may chose to use from that point onwards.

There is an exemption in the law on speeding that says that Police can exceed the limits for Policing purposes. That is how driving schools are exempt from limits but in practice stick to the 30s 40s and 50s, only ignoring the NSL.

I would imagine that if the Dog handler gave a reasonable excuse to the court for his offence, then they would consider that he was using the vehicle for Policing purposes.

There is a stated case on speeding which says that an officer exceeding the limit who is late for a court appearance will not be convicted of that offence.

Hi Madcop

i would hope that the officer concerned would be banned , cos lets face it bieng late for something like a course is a pretty trivial excuse esp for over a hundred miles an hour in a van which i would imagine doesnt have paticurly good brakes .
Speeding for a court appearance ,then well maybe as long as it was not crazy speeds

that's just my tuppence anyway!

Police spec cars always have uprated brakes. Even the Dog Vans.
I remember those on the Rover SD1. The car would travel at 130mph, some cars 140 mph and you had to guess which way you had to steer to counteract whatever way the brakes would pull to one side or the other. It was never the same twice even on the same car. Into the bargain the fluid used to boil very quickly and brake fade was an everyday excitement
