There was a sponsored thread on here with Metzeler supplying tyres to a PH'r for feedback - what happened there??
It was five years ago...

The link to my post is below. As a final aside I'm on my third set now. I've had 11,000 out of both sets so far and they feel great. I'd guess the Michelin's are every bit as good but from memory were quicker to warm up and didn't last as long. That was a PR3 on my VFR 800 though so I'm sure that there are some Michelin owners out there with more recent experience.

Always been a fan of Metz/Pirelli, using MEZ1 or Dragon Corsa back in the day. Currently using the Metz Sportec which is performing well. Not really tried it extensively in the wet, but it's lasting well - the rear is starting to show signs of squaring off at around 1850 miles.
Jeeeez! 1850 miles? I don't consider that even remotely acceptable.

I've got PR4s on my R1 and they really are totally shagged now at about 6000 miles, so I need to get new ones.
I'm not likely to do any more track days (and even less likely to do it on that bike - it would cost me too much if I binned it) so I am figuring I'd be better off with a more touring oriented tyre. I do like cornering grip, but I don't go remotely mad and my rule for riding and driving is "never faster than a decent copper would let you off for" which sounds boring but my licence is precious to me.

So any (non-sarcastic) recommendations? 190/55/17 rear, usual 120 front.

Time flies when you're having fun I suppose - seeing the thread made me think - why didn't they follow that up.....

Completely missed it! The Sportecs on my bike seem to suit it/my riding so I have just stayed with them every time I needed to change.

Have metzeler sportec m7rr's on a 996, they have lasted really well, dont square off, loads of grip in wet and dry - will be replacing with m9rr (latest iteration) when its time
I had M7RRs on my RSV4 and was really impressed with them. My current bike came with Racetec K3s on it and they're decent too. I've run nothing but Supercorsas for years but the Racetecs inspire the same level of confidence as the Supercorsas did for me.

I did once hear a rumour that Metz was owned by Pirelli but I've no idea if that's actually the case.

It’s just an endless merry go round, and some manufacturers pay more for publicity than others.

It depends on the bike but the Road 5's are likely to be the better option IMO.

Roadtec 01s are really good on some bikes but horrible on others - if you put them under an RT for example the fronts square off really badly which makes it horrible to ride (especially at slower speed).

Metz been owned by Pirelli since 1986, essentially the same company. Pirelli is a subsidiary of ChemChina with tyres coming from the factory in China. Its all just different branding/specs per market segment. Metz only make bike tyres, whereas Pirelli do other vehicles.

Its the modern world ...as I try to explain to a mate who was going on about having "the best" Italian made tyres on his Ducati and I point out they are from China like everything else these days smile

Thanks for clearing that up. It probably explains why I'm just as happy on Racetec K3s as Supercorsas; they're the same tyre just with a less flashy tread pattern smile

I was pondering getting another 1,000 miles out of the Metzeler Z8 tyres on my bike. Only I just noticed the rear has gone flat. Pumped it but cannot find the puncture anywhere.

The candidate tyres are:
Michelin Road 5 (aka Pilot Road 5).
Metzeler Roadtec 01

The main criteria are:
Good wet weather grip, good cold weather/winter grip.
Good mileage; won't square off fast with regular trips down motorways.
Good puncture resistance, if there is even any difference between tyres.

Would be interested to hear about the Metzeler Roadtec 01 in particular. It gets good reviews, eg

A few blood bikes are fitted with Dunlop Mutants, they seem to like them. They put a video on Youtube.

Just replacing my t31s with road 5 on my versys 1000 2020 model ,really don't like them made the ride very harsh and less feel than the t31 ,put 800 miles on them now and found that the standard pressure f36 r42 where going up to f42 r48 when hot making the rubbish, so now gone f33 r37 cold when hot they are f36 r 43 its better but still not great have emailed Michelin but had no reply

Don’t all tyres increase in pressure as they get hot???? Even more so when the Mercury is touching 30 degrees or more !Personally I never stick with the recommended pressures as there are just too many variables. Usually start at about minus 10% and work from there. Can’t see why a rear tyre would want 42 psi for both solo and pillion riding and someone who is 10 stone or 25 stone?!?

Tyre pressres are given for cold tyre because tyre an vehicle manufacturers KNOW that as tyres heat up so pressures increase. Stop over thinking it ant set the pressures correctly. If you ghen find tha ta couple less/more psi (when cold) make the tyres feel better then go for that.

Try a 180/60/17, quickens the steering nicely thumbup

To be fair, changing pretty much any squared off tyres for new is going to be night and day.......

That's always the problem when asking people about their experiences - they are generally remembering the old worn tyre against the brand new one

I realised just how bad the old PR4s were (worst state I've let tyres wear to in my life) when the bike wouldn't start a couple of weeks age (lunched battery) and I took the old 4XV R1 out instead (new tyres) and I was shocked at how much it was better.
