I disagree about the costs for enabling things. Nowt wrong with it if its the same price or cheaper than a black box being added to the bike.

Their perspective I assume is that its cheaper to fit to all than to some. The R&D and software costs is what you're paying for, and they have to do less to make that feature available.

Fully expect to be shot down by a load of grumpy old men but its 2023 and its better for everyone this way. It's not a personal attack from the dealer ffs.... maybe those would feel better if the dealer put some kind of placebo black box on to make them feel better :'D

We don't all have to agree smile

Personally as a Dealer I will replace old / wrong tyres and road test before sale because I want to sell a safe bike

To ask £380 more to enable a safety feature on a bike they are selling - personally I disagree with

It also meant that it was a similar price to a 14 plate which had the feature as standard

Fair play pal I was 99% expecting you to bite at that! smile

Safety is one thing yes, track packs another. Didn't think of that aspect.

So you bought a GT and turned it into an R.

Basically, yeah. An R with a decent rear seat & option of panniers. If I didn't have the 990, would have been more tempted with an R (or Evo). Quite happy with my mix for our Cornish roads.

I don't like rear pegs, I bought an exhaust hanger and binned them off.

In the interests of closure... I finally got off the pot and picked up a 2017 Superduke GT.

Just under 18,000 miles with the big service already done.

Paid £6.3k with luggage and an old satnav thrown in which all in all feels like a decent deal.
I couldnt justify the extra money for a gen 2 when it is effectively the same bike with a slightly tweaked engine, a down quickshifter and a fancier screen when this is a second bike to compliment the sports bike that I intend on keeping (for now anyway...).

Looking forward to putting some miles on it now!

I think you can get the gen2 suspension software upgrade on the gen1.

Enjoy the bike!

Yup thats the plan - I have already reached out to KTM about it.

I picked up a second hand heated / ergo seat as well which I think they need to enable on the dash before I can switch it on.

I picked up a "high miles" (43k) snotter towards the end of summer. It was well used and fairly unloved SD GT that had not seen the business end of a hosepipe for a while.

It rode well, however the front brakes were VERY spongy, and they would only bite near the bar - but subsequent pulls were better, but a few seconds later would be spongy again. The clutch pull was weird too. I tried bleeding the brakes, and it made them no better, and I put mineral oil in the clutch which was a disaster (note to self, KTM moved to DOT on the more recent stuff). Anyways, well, I've gone at it all again. Rebuilt the brakes, new clutch piston, etc. All that is documented above.

This is how much the rubber swelled

Rebuilt the brakes

The pistons were VERY gunked up

One of the oil sieve bolts was stripped

Some dremel work later - glad I got in there

Got rid of the giant cat and replaced with a straight link pipe

Tired and gross

All new

There is loads and loads more - took around 2 weeks to go through, and I've got a small list of things to do in winter (wheels, rear shock, fork oils etc).

I got it for 3900, and at this point I've spent arounf £1000 on it. Although hours of elbow grease

I think its turned out well

And it rides beautifully. Feels nearly new now, clutch and brakes superb, only thing that dates it a little is some scratches over the speed/tacho

Took it to the Ardennes, Lux and back - flawless.

Christ that's a good price!

Giving one of these serious consideration when I'm done with my VFR1200F.

How's the engine/frame paint etc holding up?

Will you get the rear shock rebuilt then?

I have been in to BMW and looked at spec for the new 1300GS and I get to £23k...it is hard to argue when you can see a Gen 2 KTM for £11k with low miles or older bikes for £6k...these seem like a bargain for a second bike and winter use / touring.

Frame is fine. Rear swing arm has some rubbing and thus some paint lifting from under the rear wheel hugger - not visible unless you take it off. The clutch side cover has a little paint flaking from the bottom/front of the motor - but I've bought a replacement on ebay for £90 - not fitted yet.

Considering the lack of care of the bike, I think its held up pretty well actually.

The only thing really cosmetically letting it down is the rear shock - that's got some rust/paint flaking on it. Also £90-ish to replace.

Out of curiosity, has anyone had the gen 1 to gen 2 suspension update and can speak to differences please?

I have, it makes a massive difference. I used to find the comfort setting allowed the bike to wallow too much, mainly on motorways and fast A roads where the road dips, it's now much better controlled but still soft and comfortable. Also the other settings are smoother, less harsh but still tight. It's a very good upgrade.

I had it applied last year by Jim Aim, free with a service.

Thanks, I saw it was irreversible and thought I'd better seek some input before pulling the trigger!

It's definitely an upgrade. Mine is a Nov 2018 model if that makes any difference.
