Never ridden one, should be a laugh :-)
That looks cracking, they’re a brilliant bike much easier to ride than you’d think. I’m tempted by the GT

Does anyone have a link for a rear wheel socket? 60mm 6 sided.

Laser do one but at £70 it feels a bit steep. I can find links to resellers of the same tool on ebay but they are all showing out of stock.

I'd prefer a 1/2" drive impact as I can gun it off but I've got some f-off big 3/4 bars so could do that too.

On a related note do people have 250Nm capable torque wrenches or just do it up FT?
On eBay from £25ish in 3/4 then use a 1/2 adaptor ?

I`ve just gone in for a Gen 3 SDR, as well.

Not a new one, "lightly used" on a `22 plate, but with only just over 1k miles on.

It`s already had a tail-tidy fitted by the last owner, along with an Evotech rad-guard, and crash bobbins.

Mine`s the one with the blue and black tank, and includes the full Tech-pack - Cannot wait now, and I pick up next Friday.

Roll on Spring !

I'd undo it with a 3/4" bar to save damaging the nut with an impact.

I have a 3/4" torque wrench that does up to 450Nm, 250Nm is right in the middle between 12" and 3/4" in my experience.

Mine's a Teng that I picked up for 30 quid that someone didn't need, you might find the same.

Went to pick mine up today, and was blessed with the weather - cold, obviously, but although the roads home were a little damp, considering it`s mid-winter, it really wasn`t too bad at all !

First observations: Unlike the Gen 2 I owned, it no longer feels remotely like a Supermoto/Adventure bike type-thingy at all - it actually feels like a Sportsbike with high bars now; pretty much like the Tuono, but with a slightly less canted-forward riding position.

I chopped in a Triumph Speed Triple RS for this - a 1050 (not the new 1200) - and no word of a lie, I could honestly feel the difference in torque within the first 100 yards away from the dealer; it was THAT noticeable. Yes, it does have a 1301cc engine, as opposed to the 1050, but the extra power really adds quite a difference. It`s also really nice to have the V-twin burble back on the overrun; very nice indeed !

Due to the cold roads/tyres, I also just left it in Street mode, as opposed to Sport >Performance>Track (being the quickest, as you`d guess), so on bimbling home I also noticed how much plusher the suspension felt as opposed to my Ohlins-laden Speedy, but I`m no suspension wizard, so it could merely be set up softer, from the off, than the Triumph, which although played with here and there, never felt soft enough on the roads for me...

Okay, I should add at this point that I am NOT knocking my old Speed Triple RS at all - or not intentionally, anyway - it was a really excellent bike that will serve most people, including me, really well, and was a bike I would absolutely recommend to anyone - it`s just come in for a comparison as it`s the one I last owned of a long line, before this Gen 3 SDR.

In short though, looking really good for my newly-acquired Gen 3 at the moment, and I cannot wait for the roads to warm up and dry out, as we all are.

Here`s a quick phone-pic of the weapon after pick up today (and instant removal of the screen that the previous owner had fitted, as I didn`t like the looks)

I wanted to get a Superduke back in July but my insurance was daft (£2,200 fully comp) as I haven't ridden on the road for 12 years as I had been racing, so I bought a 2017 Triumph Speed Triple R and love it. However, the Superduke itch is still needing to be scratched and I think that it is one of these that will replace the Triumph in due course. I haven't ridden one as that will be very harmful to the health of thr bank balance. I would like to say that the new 1200RS would be a contender but there are a few too many woes being reported for me to feel comfy taking that plunge.

What tyre pressures is everyone running?

The handbook says a standard 36psi front and rear. I went out the other day having set them at 36 with a digital gauge I know is accurate.

Ambient was 8C and I'd guess the road was colder because it was that rare lull between the rain and it going icy again. Roads were dry.

I wasn't riding hard but got got a dash warning for front pressure too high and when I checked on the dash readout it was showing 43psi. I had a very gentle run home plus some time parked while I went in the house for the gauge. It was showing 42 when I checked.

The tyre was warn to the touch and I'm guessing the low ambient but dry roads allowed a big jump up. The rear was showing similar pressures and they did feel a bit hard.

One other observation is that the bike really turns heads. Just pootling round town (standard exhaust etc.) it gets some stares. All blokes so its not disapproving IMO.

Has anyone got a fly screen they can recommend that does more than look nice and protect the dash instruments?

I'm after a little wind protection.

Its decent for what it is. Computer says 50mpg, actual is 45mpg over a tank.

On the road 130 miles between fills will be easy.

On a semi related note there are going to be lots of these bikes with an unused 6th gear. Its stupidly tall and useless below 70. Outside of motorways you wouldn't use it. Equally you can pull away in 2nd easily so it could easily be a four speed box.

I've just bought a 16 tooth front sprocket for my GT - will make 1st a little lower for my favourite alpine roads and 6th more useable.

I'm going to have to work a lot harder to keep up then! wink (Especially if you also take the top box off! hehe)

Just a bump to say I gave in to a couple of changes.

I got a J-Tech tail tidy which is pretty decent. I don't doubt that the Evotech one is better but I couldn't get on board with the £200+ price. The J-Tech is £40 and well made.

I also got a Leo Vince LV-10 slip on for similar reasons. I don't doubt the Austin Racing V3 is superior but its also £500+ and was saying an ambiguous up to 10 week wait. The LV-10 in silver suits the silver tank IMO. Its not even that loud. You can still hear the valve train at idle. I haven't ridden with it yet but had it to 6k rpm when hot and it was fine. £200 delivered.

One other thing, do other owners find these very cold blooded? Mine is lumpy as hell to the point it seems to want to stall until its got some good heat in it.

No issues with my Gen3, I'd say it's the smoothest V-twin I've owned in all honesty, must smoother than the Ducati's I've owned.

Thanks - all the reviews I've seen say the same.

I can't say mine is. Its to the point where I feel I need to warm it up before riding which hasn't been an issue with any other bikes I've owned.

They are very sensitive to battery condition, if a few weeks of riding doesn't sort it out, ie Italian tune up, then you might need a new battery. Also if it's anywhere near 18,000 miles the valve clearances will probably need adjusting, mine ran a lot better after that was done, the rear cylinder needed all 4 adjusting, plus a new cam chain tensioner on the rear cylinder. I think yours is probably too new for this to be relevant ?

They are also sensitive to oil. I had a dealer do an oil service a few years ago (Not Jim Aim who did a fantastic job of the 18k service) and the engine was noisier and the clutch was grabby afterwards, worse than it was when it went in. I changed the oil and filter and used the genuine ultra expensive (!) Motorex PowerSynt 4T and it cleared up completely, noise reduced and clutch back to normal. So I'm not convinced all KTM dealers use the correct oil.

Was that ever not true ? smile

I think the top box is staying this year, I can feel mesh jacket and jeans being used in May and Klim left at home so will need waterproofs and also space for the drone.

I'm only just past run in mileage. First service done for what thats worth.

It will stall revving a bit from idle when cold and just closing the throttle. On the move I've found myself opening the throttle a lot (from cold) and nothing happening. Its really different from the Jap bikes I've had for the last 15 years where I never thought twice about them just working.

It does sound like there’s a problem. Even when cold mine is very keen to rev.
