Hey dudes and dudettes, I need a bit of help... I've just picked up a ZXR 400 L3 and love her to bits Rode her 50 miles back from Nottingham a few days ago with no problems at all. Taking her back from work waiting to turn right at a junction she conked out for no reason and I dropped her mad no damage to the bike, my right foot stopped that (ouch) Took her for another spin yesterday, was fine when revving up but as soon as I went into top and the revs dropped below 6K she lost power and conked again. After phoning the RAC and being told I'd have to wait 2 1/2 hours for someone I tried again to get her going and after much rocking, shaking and colourful cursing she coughed into life. I got about 3 miles before we stopped again after dropping below 6K, got her going this time by the same thing but with full choke and lots of throttle.

Not having had "proper" bike before, I'm guessing this could be clogged idle jets in the carb? The guy I bought it from had left it unridden with a full tank for a few months. Anyone had anything similar? Whats the best way to deal with it? I filled up the tank with high octane fuel and a shot of Redex and left her standing with the fuel tap open for a while so the mixture can soak into the carbs and hopefully dissolve any junk. Any suggestions for a better solution??

Cheers!!

Should add I'm not really up to stripping down the carb just yet, lol.

Hi! Firstly the fuel is probably past it`s best...Best to fill er up with fresh juice and Redex like you have done....

ZXR 400`s don`t like the rpm down below 6000rpm..they are designed to spin up high and are quite gutless down below...it`s a feature of a high revving small capacity 4 cylinder...Cane it and clear the tubes so to speak...They love to rev and rev ...
The problem would be even worse with dodgy juice...

Thanks for the advice, guess I'll just have to rev the wotsits off it.... ho-hum

Started her up today, after a bit of a lumpy patch got loads of white smoke and a lovely carbon smell so I guess whatever was in there has burnt off! She's certainly running a lot smoother low down now.

Just hope it doesn't end up on my foot again, that still hurts lol.
