Chain Cleaner....
Discussion
I wanna clean the chain without taking the bike apart. I think I saw a blue plastic cleaning kit which you placed around the chain containing cleaning fluid and a brush, but a mate suggests these aren't too clever. Does anyone know of a kit that would do something similar? It looked quite good to me!
Cheers.

I had one on my mountin bike. probably not good to use on a motorbike. it worked great but there must be better things out there

Yep, it's a bugger of a job innit!
I always use a plastic pan scourer to 'scrape' as much of the muck off as possible, then a stiff brush with a little 'Muck-Off', let it stand for a couple of mins then scrub off with hot water and baby shampoo. Yep that's right, baby shampoo. I never take green washing liquid anywhere near a bike, it's too alkaline. It's a good opportunity to check each and every O-ring as well...but I'm a fussy sod..... :-)
What does everyone lube their chains with? I use plain old gear oil as recommended by the bike manufacturer, but it does get chucked about a bit.

Wurth chain cleaner and a rag.
The crap literally runs off. Thing is its easy to use the can up quickly. short squirts and a wipe are what's needed.
the wurth dry chain lube is good too. no fling and my chain hardly ever needs adjusting. i get away with doing it at services and tyre changes!!
I hear that scottoilers keep the chain nice and clean.

Paraffin and an old paint brush to clean the chain and gear oil for lubricant.
I only use "posh" chain lube when touring, purely for convieninece. I don't belive any of them work one jot better than common or garden gear oil.
I have a chain cleaner contraption for my pushbike which works very well (although I put paraffin in that as well) The chain cleaner, shown earlier in this thread, looks like a big version of the same thing.

I always use a toothbrush and diesel. I keep a green plastican in the shed full of diesel. disolves the old lube and runs off. Stick a old tray (or cat litter tray in my case!) under the bike to catch the mess. Get a wadge of newspaper or better a stiff bit of cardboard box to shield the rear wheel/tyre. You don't want any oil, lube or diesel on the edges of the tyre next time you ride. i find i have to remove the coolant expansion tanks and the cover behind it to get to the front sprocket every few months - loads of gunk builds up in there. trouble is the grit gets in to the gunk and makes a nasty abraisive goo (technical terms these!). then lube up with standard spray-on chain lube or chain wax (Halfords or any bike shop). The wax seems to cause less fling (remember to leave it for a bit before riding) - jobs a good-un!!

2) Use parafin or a proprietary chain cleaner (the former is alot cheaped and goes miles)
The paraffin is pink (like duty free diesel), cos there is much less tax on it, I couldn't use petrol or clear diesel to clean my chain, knowing that more than 80% of the purchase price had gone to that overwieght larcenous Scotch b*rstard at No 11!

1) Dont use petrol or white spirits, they both break the o rings down
2) Use parafin or a proprietary chain cleaner (the former is alot cheaped and goes miles) - use a household paint brush and it'll be a matter of mins work.
3) Lube with your normal chain lube
Jobs a good un ..

See point one of this post! white spirt or petrol rots the O-rings in your chain! Parafin does not.
Branded chain cleaners like wurth work well I never use a brush or a rag just blast it with teh sprey seems to do the trick
