It's there to stop your foot from getting between the chain and the sprocket and you slicing your toes off afaik. Mainly used on race bikes.

That's a good thing then!?!
Would it not just be easier to keep your foot on the pegs??

It would but sometimes that's not always possible
Hmmm... I know a guy up here who by some combination of events managed to tip his girlfriend off the back.
He looked down to see her hanging onto the side of the bike and tried yelling at her to let go, not understanding why she wouldn't just slide.
Eventually he pulled up and found she'd stuck her foot through the back wheel as she fell off.
She hasn't got that foot any more.

She lost the lower half of the calf as well. He did initially say that he was going to give up riding (on the road at any rate) but old habits die hard.

Just out of interest, are they still together...does she blame HIM for what happened?
Can't think of anything worse than injuring a loved one, fault or no fault...

I said 'combination of circumstances' in the original post because even after talking to him I didn't get a full picture of what happened, so whether he wound it on and she wasn't expecting it, whether he wheelied it, whether she just slipped I don't know. So I have no idea whether she blames him but they are indeed still together
