Just seen the BBC breakfast news, who covered a story (not new I know) about the goverments consultation paper one fitting bikes with speed limiters, so they are less powerful, slower and safer, thereby reducing deaths. The presenter was very chipper about the story saying it might be a good idea!!!!

Didn't the goverments own figure just a few weeks ago show that speed was a contributing factor in less then 3.5% of accidents!

Are they looking at the same for cars, since most cars have more power (BHP) than bikes? Yes I know that they are heavier, but the implication of the story was that power was directly linked to deaths.
My Honda deisel has 138BHP for example, nearly 20 more than my GSXR600

BBC - Balanced reporting, due to the unique way they are funded. My ar#e

I've noticed the BBC getting more political of recent months.

Just more loony policies!

Its NOT the BBC or the govt, its simply a consultation paper. The BBC reported it and at the end pointed out that the govt are not keen. There is bias in the BBC but not on this one, they just reported facts from what I saw. It was on just as I left.

Sledgehammer and nut springs to mind....

Part of the proposal affects all of us bikers yet they mostly seem to be talking about mini-motos and off-road bikes etc.

Maybe they'll insist on stabilisers next!

Its not a proposal, its a consultation and as the report itself mentioned the govt are not keen on limiters etc. It just makes a discussion which is the point of the document!

Many cars are already restricted to 155mph. If that happens to bikes then it's no biggy and there will be mechanisms to derestrict them for track days.

Exactly, I would think if it ever did happen it would just follow the 155 car issue. That isnt actually a prescribed limit, its a 'gentlemans' agreement between some of the German car manufacters on certain models. I wouldnt have an issue if the same happened on bikes, but it will only ever be an informal agreement.

I thought the idea had been mooted years ago and was booted out last year. How come it's resurfaced?

Radio 1 news have also covered the story, saying MPs (didn't say how many or whom) thought it a good idea.

Not sure if this is a real issue on a consultation document or just journalists not reporting the full story?

Funny how all these 'Consultation Documents' are keen to relieve us of our our freedom to ride/drive or take any pleasure whatsoever in doing so.

By all means look at mini-motos and kids riding un-insured over playgrounds and parks but please leave the majority of us riders/drivers alone.

If we are talking about something like 155mph restrictor then I can't see it being an issue for 99% of bikers.

The way the news seems to be wording it though is 'to curb speeding'. That could mean eg 90mph restrictors.

Now if they restricted cars to this level . . . . .

We all know speed is a small factor in bike accidents. Many bike accidents could be avoided with more training for both bike & car drivers, but restricting speed ain't going to stop joe bloggs pulling out on you in a 30 limit.
