Emmmm seems typical of someone ignorant of bikes.

Get out.

You have an inferiority complex that will get killed if you get on two wheels and someone else killed if you keep "just trying to keep up" with bikes.

What are you trying to prove?
Seems a little harsh chaps, why not educate and not alienate? <-see what I did there biggrin

MrMoonyMan, don't be put off from posting in here, we are usually a friendly bunch! smile

Hello there you bikeing chaps,

Been dipping into 'biker banter' for a little while as I am a bit interested in getting onto two wheels.

Anyhow, my reaction when I see a biker (ie. something quick not a silly 125cc/moped/harley) is always to try and get behind them so that I can then try using my midrange grunt to keep up from a safe distance. I will indicate that I've seen a biker by obviously moving from near the centre of the road to nearer the kerb.

Gents, I have nothing to prove and certainly don't have a complex. I only came in here to learn about bikes a bit.

I certainly didn't come in looking for an argument or to stir things up, so again, I apologise.

Possibly what I wrote initially has been mis-understood. I shall re-iterate;
If I am in my car on a road where a fast bike is in front of me and the road opens up then I will have my car in the correct gear to 'attempt' to keep up with the bike has he accelerates off into the distance!

I fail to see a problem with this. I would NEVER hassle a bike. I am ALWAYS aware of bikes around me and give them a wide berth. AND I am aware that almost every bike on road will be quicker than me.

Really, did I need to be greeted like that or did I just come across very badly, I didn't mean to and as I said wasn't looking to aggrevate.
Fair one.

beer

I had an image of you weaving in and out of traffic trying to stay on the tail of a motorbike. Which has happened to me and is a bit disconcerting.
Having a nice stretch of open road and trying to keep a bike in sight is a different story. Dont be fooled by Harleys though, theyre not all boat anchors.

dammit - actually became the overly hostile militant biker-tt with holier than thou attitude that I usually hate in BB. Ill say 20 hail marys.

I think he just came over a bit wrong, I often try and "keep up" with a two wheeled bretherin. I think his post was just a bit misconstrued.

we all like to play.
be it some chav in a saxo
a plasterer in a subaru
estate agent in a tvr
or anyone on a bike.
we ALL have fun.
problems start when we get ideas above our performance.
i drive a van over the cat'n'fiddle(a537) and i get held up by rossi wannabes who cant corner.
when im out on my bike i get people in cars /vans/lorries ignoring the highway code because im only a bike and they know that if they knock me off they will probably get away with it.(thats the few that even look)
both camps have idiots.
lets just get out there and have a laugh and try to look out for the other guy.

i think thats pretty fair enough, obviously a Saab 900 isnt going to keep up with a superbike its common sense, but if your just trying to see the performance difference and a bike pulling away when your car is going for it, really whats the problem?.

Oh NO no no! My car is far too lovely (to me) and has already had far too much of my time/money/tears and effort gone into it for me to drive like a t1t trying to keep up with a bike in any form of traffic! yikes

You see that is the impression I have of them along with the impression that they don't go round corners very well and that the bloke riding it is usually trying to re-live some imagined child hood!
Even that new one (with the black/orange body) that looks pretty nice puts me off for that reason. Much prefer the look of something like an R1.

You're spot on there, think I put what I meant a bit wrong and so it was misconstrued.
Also, cheers for the welcome. thumbup

Forgive me again here if I'm being naive but surely there's nearly no-one on todays roads who actually thinks like that? I can well believe that there are loads of people who are totally unaware (heck, people seem to miss me in my CAR and try to change lanes onto me) but shirley there aren't enough people on the roads who believe they can knock bikers off and get away with it because the biker won't be getting up?

MrMM,

FWIW, I didn't read anything ignorant in your original post... thought it was a reasonable question. Harshly dealt with gents... me thinks.

You must have missed this part of the quote. All bikes have their place, 125's for learners and junior GP riders, mopeds are great for city commuting and harley make some great very fast bikes.

I don’t see why that makes him ignorant about bikes you probably do the same with cars if you see something like a Nissan Micra you instantly assume is not going to be quick.
Lolss what i find so funny is you assume i know nothing about cars just because i own a bike.

You are funny. Sad but funny.

i just dont think they realise what a bike is capable of

i know a few people like that ,they drive half tasty cars and are totaly oblivious to "REAL" speed
i get this when im in the car with mum and bikes overtake. mum always complains that they over take when there is oncoming traffic in the distance and "there wasnt enough room" even when the biker is casually overtaking.

trying to explain that is nothing like overtaking in a car since the performance is so difference. i think because people see bikes moving with traffic they dont understand how much quicker they truely are.

My father was a biker in the 60s (Vincent Black Shadow) and consequently drummed a respect for bikers into me when I passed my car test 16 years ago. I still hear him in my ear at every junction (look out for bikes!) and I always move over and leave a gap if I see one of you coming. But, in the last 4 or 5 years, the standard of bike riding seems to have gone down hill. I rarely get a thanks for moving over for instance, and a few weeks ago i had a bike (it was a powerful one) sit right in my blind spot despite me offering an overtake manouvre - in the end I had to demonstrate how well an Elise goes round bends to get rid of him - I guess there's good and bad on both sides.
