I just meant that if the bike doesn't fire the first thing I check is the kill switch because it's one of the basic controls I use on a daily basis and wondered why it wasn't the same for everyone.

Err, no - I use the key...Was told to do this by the dealer, but can't remember 100% why now.

I did a search on this and it yielded lots of arguments and no clear reason to use one or the other confused

The only possible reasons I could think of are

1. Wear and tear on the switch contacts. Hardly a consideration.
2. On my 2004 R1 (with no light switch) the side lights are permanently wired. Once the engine has started, the headlamps then come one. If I use the kill switch then the headlamps remain on. So there is the potential to drain the battery if I'm going to be stopped for any length of time.

I did the same thing once, about 3 days after picking the bike up from the dealer, after 10 mins of nothing, I was convinced the bike was shagged Luckily I did one last chec before calling the dealer and embaressing myself rolleyes I have never used the kill switch in all my month of biking as I was told that it wears the contacts. confused

I always thought that if you don't use the kill switch then there's a potential for copper oxide to form which would otherwise be cleared away by the action of the switch. I use mine on a daily basis now and have done since this bike was new (6 years and 30k) and never had an issue. I suspect although using the switch must wear it a bit it will be designed for many more usage cycles than I could possibly put it through. The advantage of using it everyday is that you instinctively know where it is and you'll automatically flick it off if anything happened or at least stand a better chance of doing that than if you didn't habitually use it.
