Having passed my DAS, with only 10 hours training and 2 minors I might add smile, I'm now on the look out for a bike.

Thinking something like a 2000 - 2003 GSX600R as I've always liked them and hear they're highly rated. Not adverse to R6's either...

Not really a Honda or Kwak fan but I am open minded.

As a random choice a speed triple is also a bike I really like.

So taking into account the price and my limited experience, whats the bike for me??

Cheers

I'll chip in with my usual:
I got a kawasaki Z750 when I passed my test. Loved it.

Do you want to start with the biggest bike you can get? I ask as my 600 Fazer is bloody fast and good for 03 reg and under 4k on the clock. I have been on many fast cars but the fazer is soimething else.

Also the insurance is a big shitter no matter how old you are when you passed your DAS. I passed at 30 and for a year or 2 old ltr bike it would cost me over 1K a year fully comp. I could pay it and have the money but cannot see the point in throwing money away

So what you want for 3K, a good starting bike, commuter, 600CC sports bike?

My GSXR750WV is for sale, check my profile for pics - £2.5k. Great first bike.

TPFT insurance shouldn't be too much. smile

Only difference you'll see between a Gixer 600 and Fazer 600 is in your wallet and between your ears. But if you fancy it, go for it. smile

ETA: Or go for the 750, an even bigger "improvement"! biggrin

Before you get into making too many decisions, go and get a few test rides. Try 2, 3 and four cylinder bikes so that you can feel how different engines produce their power and torque. Try different types of bike, some more sporty and some less sporty. You may think that a 600 sports bike is what you want now but once you’ve ridden a few bikes you may find that you are happier with a slightly less sporty larger engined bike as it’s more relaxed and, within your skill limitations, just as quick.

Only you will know what bike best suits you but remember, unless you’re a MotoGP star in the making, just about any bike will be considerably more capable than you.

Either way, have great fun choosing your new bike.

Ride safe and enjoy

Totally agree. Was originally thinking of 600 Bandit, and spending about £2k. However looking at the costs of sportier stuff, slowly dropping with the weather, I thought why buy something only to replace it after 3 months of riding...

End of the day it'll only go as quick as i pull my right hand back, I understand that the temptation will be there to go quickly. I imagine the 1st time I scare myself it'll put thing into perspective.

Will definately do some test rides. Waiting for a dry weekend might take a while though...

Congrats on passing! I was in the same position as you 2 years ago. I bought an 03 CBR600rr. Ok it wasn't £3000, it was £6000 but nonetheless it was the easiest bike to ride for me. It was extremely forgiving of my numurous mistakes and like the previous posters have said every bike right now will be way more capable than you are. Not sure what the prices are like but I would recommend a CBR6 or a fazer 6. IMHO I would steer well clear of the litre sports bikes unless you want to get friendly with the scenary in your first 6 months on the road!

Bandit 1200.

Anything with a fairing ups the insurance a lot even if you are just doing 3rd party.

I'm biased, but the speed triple is very easy to ride for a beginner, very torquey so gear selection isn't as critical as a 600, just roll the throttle on, and the upright riding position is much easier/safer when filtering through traffic. Oh and by the way I have a black 04 SE for sale @ £3.5k

I got my sp1 for under 3k but might not be the best bike to learn on, had a ducati monster m600 as my first bike last year but was not the most reliable bike and felt slow quite quickly.
