I have just offered £9K for a restored 1957 BSA DBD34 Gold Star, which i think will be accepted.
It's a bike i always wanted, but am aware that is somewhat less than practical-or nice to ride even, in many ways!

But is it a given, that these bikes can only go up in value and are they semi-useable on the road?

It has the RRT2 gearbox, GP carb and correct 190mm front brake.
(From a brief ride some years ago, i recall the RRT2 being a nightmare around town).

Dead jealous......have a long held desire myself for one, although, I'd perhaps lean towards a RGS instead.

RRT2 box does indeed have very high first gear.....but it's just a matter of learning the DBD clutch-slip technique.

BSA day down the Ace Cafe is magic when half a dozen DBD's fire up and leave at the same time......biggrin

Castrol R. Oh yeah, i had forgotten about that stuff!
It's apparently awful for your engine, in some ways!
But it's the stuff to be seen (smelt) using!

A real bikers bike !You need Lewis Leathers, seaboot socks with tops turned over top of your boots- oh and a white silk scarf too thumbup p.s. if you have an open face helmet (& Stadium goggles)you can have a fag hangin out the edge of your mouth too hehe

Len Haggis in Surrey is, I believe, THE man for Goldies.

The bike will be hard enough work as it is, without wearing rubbish gear!
Someone i know rides a late-model Velocette Venom Thruxton and he wears all the 'right stuff'.
He admits, quietly, that it's hopeless compared to modern and safe clothing/helmet.
But yeah, at rallies, etc., it looks the business, i suppose!

Me too.

Actually, having spent many years riding 'old Brit stuff' there's a very good reason for NOT wearing 'modern' gear, aside from the obvious one of looking a complete tit...wink

Modern ultra protective gear 'insulates' you too much from the sensations of riding a vintage bike, and there's perhaps the temptation to ride it beyond what they should be, which you can tend to do more with a full face helmet etc. The one and only time I had to ride my BSA wearing my Arai full face I found I was too insulated from all the little wheezes and mechanical noises that you've learnt over the years and have to listen out for while riding to make sure it's doing what it vaguely should be.

A Goldie is an experience of ownership, not just a bike to ride, so enjoy that whole experience, not just a bit of it.... biggrin
Plus.....as I said before, you'll look a tit...biglaugh

The old gear might make you look, erm, old, but it won't do much for you when Doris in her Fiesta rams you!

Congrats on the Gold Star, stunning looking (and unique sounding) bike! I assume that with all that kit it's in full clubmans trim?

I don't think the new Davida 'pudding basin' helmets are road legal are they- unless they've changed them recently? I always wear a good full face helmet, even when riding the old 1920's stuff since a mate hit a bus at 60mph. Broke his jaw through a new full face Arai, so open face = no longer with us.

And old bikes aren't just for the old men- I'm only 27!!
