I politely refused the breakdown service offered through my insurance then I got my first puncture... mistake!

Anyway, my 350z has just come out of breakdown / recovery too so I need to cover my car and my bike. Are there any particularly bike friendly places?

Im with the rac as they cover me on the bike or the car for one price and also as a member,so im covered if i am out with someone else and they breakdown. They seem to cover you if you have an accident as well unlike the aa who will charge you.
The only problem i had this year was that the rac will not recover you whilst abroad if you have an accident and as i did not take out recovery from the insurance company they would not recover me either.

The rac will first off send a van to see you. If they can't get you going they will offer the recovery to all their local contractors who do both cars and bikes before they offer the recovery to bike only contractors. It depends on how long it takes for all the car+bike contractors to accept or turn down the work as to how long you will wait for. Mostly my experience have been pretty good except that once I broke down at a services on the M6 at 4pm and the rac didn't manage to find out that none of their car+bike contractors couldn't take me until 11pm. By that time all their bike contractors wouldn't take me either and I was put in a hotel. I was pretty pissed off and they sent me a bike contractor out in the morning and they got me going in ten minutes flat - alarm problem. So if you go for a seperate bike breakdown policy that uses bike shops as their first port of call you may wait less time. Ignore the hype about bike specific units, I've never seen one.

RAC have always been better for me (with cars) than their main competitor. Had a puncture recently on the bike and RAC got me going again quickly.

I was asked when I called in if they tyre was shredded or whether it would be repairable at the roadside - if the former then they would have sent a contractor to collect the bike rather than send a van out to repair.

I've been with Green Flag for a number of years and used both their car and bike services on more than one occasion - 2 punctures on the bike and an obscure fuelling issue on the car leaving me stranded on more than several occasions...

I had a dedicated bike service arrive promptly both times, and the car service was even better - even returning to deliver the car to a garage as it was too late one evening.

Reasonable too, I think it's £115 for personal and home service for my wife and I.

I use RAC (handy as it covers the person so any your in or on smile ) On the whole pretty good although I did have to wait some 4+ hours for a bike recovery wagon when the water pump sheerd some bolts, thankfully I was just down the road from a mates house so chat a about 5 cupa's killed some time!

I’m with Britannia who are cheaper than RAC and AA and won the Which? Review of breakdown services last year. They cover bikes and cars and the policy I have also includes in the price full European cover for one named vehicle. I’ve not had to call them for the bike but I did for the TVR (there’s a surprise!!!!!) and they were very good.

Thanks for the recommendations guys, I guess the RAC would be the smartest choice considering I've 2 cars and a bike.

With just roadside cover ( http://www.rac.co.uk/web/uk-breakdown/ ) if I was to get a blowout that couldn't be repaired at the side of the road would they still recover me and the bike to a garage or would I need solution one. I can't quite work out whether nationwide recovery means moving the vehicle or just you to home.

Standard recovery is to take you and your car/bike to the nearest garage. The extra bits mean that you can specify that the car/bike is taken home instead and optionally you can go somewhere different.

Thanks Dern, much cheaper than expected, I'll buy it after lunch (what's the odds I pick up a puncture at lunch now...)

If you don't need RAC cover immediately, I found waiting until I saw an RAC man selling cover on a stand a cheaper way of getting the same product - he can offer a good discount to get your money.

No, I am not an RAC man, but last August I managed to get Roadside and Recovery for me at the normal price, with the wifeys cover free.

Hope its not to late but dont get just roadside cover. They will often only tow you 10 miles and not to the nearest garage. Also if its late and everywhere is shut they wont take you home.Think also about if you have a breakdown miles away from home and it can not be fixed straight away.

Just taken out the full top of the range RAC cover using Tesco clubcard vouchers.
Cost us a fraction of the normal price, and covers everyone in the household no matter what vehicle they are in.

We've got full cover via with Green Flag via our bank covering both me & wife on any vehicle that we're in (even as passenger I think)& that includes bikes as I found only a couple of weeks ago with puncture (thread on here)

Great service, kept to timescale local specialist recovery firm rolled up with low floored VW van (specially built in Australia apparently for shifting cattle!) Bike was handled properly & took me & bike to dealer.
Couldn't fault it. Cost about £110 year I think which for cover provided is excellent.

Tis a great idea have had the same for a couple of years now.

Son was picked up from near Donnington on his bike last week, RAC turned up within 40 mins with a dedicated bike trailer . The only downside , and I don't know if all recoveries do the same, is that they can only take you approx 60 miles , then they have to hand you over to their next depot. Took nearly 4 hours for a 2 hour journey. This would be a real PITA if you had some distance to cover.

http://www.britanniarescue.com/ can't praise them enough after car and bike breakdowns boxedin

They don't seem to have the accident get out clauses that the AA and RAC have.

Don't know about the RAC having an accident clause, my son was taken out by a Polish HGV and there was no question about the recovery.
