Donington gets F1 from 2010 - MotoGP/WSB
Discussion
This could be great news, or it could be awful news . .
I know Donington doesn't have enough toilets, that the camping is crap, the entry system poor, the merchandise area ste, grandstand availability very limited, access to the circuit is poorly managed etc . . . BUT, you can at least see some racing . .
Please do not loose MotoGP or WSB to that awful sthole in Northants that is Silvertone !
I know the toilets are great, the camping is probably fantastic, entry will be easier, merchandise will be on hard standing, grandstands everywhere and access has been sorted . . . . BUT, you can't watch for more than 2 corners, it's an appalling place to watch rcing.
Assen was fantastic at the weekend, as was Mugello. Mugello's view form the hill's was more like Donington in that you can see so much more from your selected vantage point.
Silverstone is awful to watch anything, I knwo I make the effort to go to every BSB/WSB round there fo rthe last 7-8yrs but it's only because I'm addicted, it's not cos I like it, it's a dump.
They have not focussed on bike fans and generally show little regard for them in my experience.
I hope the utter pricks that invaded the track haven't damaged Donington' opportunity too much and that the proposed £100m Donington investment programme over the next 5yrs realises the ambitions of MotoGP . .
I go to see the racing, I agree so much more can be done to improve Donington and seemingly they do not listen (new owners now though) but they can add more toilets, improve the camping, sort the merchandise area, put up more grandstands, improve traffic handling . . .
Silverstone can't improve the view and let's not start on the mickey mouse chicane . . .
Sorry for the rant . . . Wanted F1 to stay at Silverstone, but no where near as much as I want MotoGP to stay at Donington.

I hope so craig a it will ruin the experience for fans . . . Yes they'll be able to pee is absolute luxury, but if they're there to watch racing then they're going to miss out.
Standing on the back at Donington just down from Coppice we can see Foggys entry and xit to Melboure, Goddards, Craner, entry to Old Hairpin, under Starkeys, Macleans, Coppice and the back straight.
Silverstone . . . err well . . . Bridge exit, Luffield, mickey mouse chicane, some of start finish . . that's it !
Circuits without topogrpahy do not lend themselves so well to viewing and the F1 fans are going to get a better view than they had.
My folks are going to the F1 this weekend as I managed to get them VIP's and they haven't been for 35yrs. I'm hoping to see Hamilton win for them.
Last time I was there with custoemrs they were surprised to see me not coming back on the Sunday as it was BSB at Snetterton and that's a far better days racing regardless of the free beer. You can even see more there than Silverstone. . .
Assen was great, but it was not the best for viewing where we were, altough I am sure there are better spots probably. Won't be going back though, as somewhere else next year . . . Jerez to start the season of

Well, it will have to go somewhere as to do the work neccessary to alter Donny for F1, the circit will likely have to close all of next season at least. Actually, I personally think they would need to close it now to stand any chance of being ready in time for the 2010 British GP...I thought it had already been announced that the Moto GP was moving to Sillystone..?
Brands would be better for the Moto GP than Sillystone.
If it's been announced I haven't heard yet . . . I tend to agree that the level of change may require significant disruption although closure would stop any revenue being brought in at all .. . . dunno if they could afford to do that.
I can see it now, no Eurosport coverage of a race being held at Sillystone . . . Not a great looking future.
I'm trying to be open minded about Beeb's coverage of MotoGP, but given the horlick the guys are making of WSB on Eurosport at the moment I'm struggling to be positive about it all . .

I've been pretty lucky with F1 as the only place i've actually gone is Monaco where i could virtually pat the drivers on the head as they went past.
And MotoGP i've just come back from Assen where our seats have an awesome view of the last chicane before/and the start straight.
I've been to Silverstone twice, once for the Renault World Series and once for GP Masters and i couldnt seem to get a good viewpoint. The stands at the bottom of the track by the last two bends before the startline seemed pretty slow and to be honest it was a bit boring.. But i've not seen F1 there so cant comment.
I hear facilities for Donington MotoGP weren't great??

Sounds like you were just to our left, we were just past the apex on the exit of the left hander before the last chicane. So we could see them in, through and out but not up start finish . . .You never know-it might, maybe, lead to better access roads been built to Donny. I'm not sure that F1 was the only reason but the new road around Sillystone certainly copes with volumes better.
I think problem with Donny is it could do with another entrance off the roads on "backside" of circuit-sort of around Macleans/Coppice area. Probably wouldn't suit the "corporate" image types tho'who probably want most people coming in via Exhibition centre area etc.

Not heard the 3 laps left comment . .
I thought it was the fuel sensor failing to alert the ECU that the engine needed knocking off a bit and with it failing it used up what was left . .
nope, other way round, it failed with the ecu then thinking there wasnt any fuel left hence the engine shut down!!!!!I thought it was the fuel sensor failing to alert the ECU that the engine needed knocking off a bit and with it failing it used up what was left . .

My first ever bike meeting was the GP at Silverstone in '81. Went a few times in the '80's- not good for spectating at all, although I don't know what it's like these days. I reckon it could happen. As for Donington, look forward to 100 foot high fencing moved back 50 yards, thanks to the to55ers who decided it would be a good idea to take a stroll in the middle of the track while the GP was still on. Round 'em up, dig a big hole next to the track and chuck 'em in alive. Several hundred tons of cement on top should make a nice base for a grandstand.
