Im about to sit my bike test and would like a decent set of leathers. Could anyone recomend good but also affordable gear as im fairly skint at the moment.

There has been some good sunny days and when im sitting at the lights in my car im taking a bit more notice as to what bikers are wearing these days. There seems to be alot off people on their bikes with T-shirts and trainers on. Are they mad??? or have they just never come off a bike before??? So with these guys in mind, i thought u should watch this clip i found (not child friendly)

If you want 100% safe you best go buy a Volvo, or take the bus.

Whatever you wear on your bike, it isn't going to save your skin if you get T boned by a car doing 30mph, so you make the personal decision just how much protection you want to put around you, but remember it is never safe, just safer.

Have a look at Ebay... always plenty there and for not much money.

Also think about how and when you ride. If you're going to ride in all winds and weathers skip leather and go for textiles. Leather has better abrasion properties when it's dry but wet leather rips easily. Plus - given the piss poor summer we've had - leathers can be colder than textiles and obviously are not water resistant.

The recent thread about kevlar lined jeans / cargo pants was interesting - looks like modern technology has caught up with good old cow hide, which is good news if you're not into the power ranger / hells angel look.

The videos on the 'Draggin' products website of some guy (the MD of the company?) sliding down a runway on his arse wearing their jeans is a pretty impressive show for the product, and they're not the only company making stuff with Kevlar in them.

Also slash-resistant, if you are into knife fighting at the weekends. Handy eh? biggrin

They sell a couple of different types of Kevlar lined combat trousers in my local shop, but they're best part of £100 a pair. Mind you, they do have an awful lot of useful pockets biggrin

People are not stupid for wearing T-shirt and trainers on a bike, they normally know what the risks are and have made an informed choice to do so.

I have been known to scoot to work in hot summer wearing suit trousers, a shirt and work shoes - yes if I came off it would cause more damage - but I don't go out riding intending to come off wink

Just done my DAS, passed last week, and have been out shopping...

I'm not a fan of the power-ranger look, and will occasionally commute on my bike (when I get it), so needed stuff that was practical for off the bike as well as on...

I went to Hein Gericke in birmingham, which I have to say I was VERY impressed with...

Got some Alpinestars boots (I'll take some normal shoes in a tailpack/tankbag for work), A pair of black Draggin Kevlar jeans(with some CE knee protectors to go in them), and a HeinGericke jacket with CE shoulder, elbow & back protectors that looks perfectly decent when off the bike.. it's obviously a biking jacket, but I wouldn't feel like too much of a tit wandering around town in it:

...all for ~£360 which I thought was pretty reasonable!
(already had a helmet and gloves from doing my CBT & DAS)

You should, as it looks like a top quality chav tracksuit top.... hehe

'Meh', I nearly bought one like that myself, but decided it wouldn't look the part on a Harley. It is a lot more practical than a leather jacket, but I'm as big a poser as the rest of 'em. biggrin

You might be surprised how warm you'll be walking around in a biking jacket on a reasonable day
