I have Alpinestar SMX4's and SMX 4 WP's (the Goretex version) basically bought the WPs for commuting as the standard boots were so good, my SMX3's before that survived numerous trackday incidents <cough> and remained held together smile

I find the Sidis too narrow so have no real experience but friends that have them rave about them, so its a case of whichever fit you best.

How water resistant would you expect the SMXR's to be (Lorica version, not goretex)?

I've got some SMX R's and Supertech R's and the new 'techs are just so bloody comfortable...

I've always worn AStars and been very happy with them.

There is a pair of Alpinestars GPS WP that are £135 on bikersdirect.
Are they the ones you meant?

Only problems I have had with my Sidis after 4 years is a broken zip tag (easily fixed), some smoothing on the soles (as mentioned above) and a missing screw from the one of the "vertebrae" running down the back of the boot. These things have not detracted from what is a comfortable boot that provides good feel.

I had a pair of Alpinestars GP Pros for 10 years and only just replaced them with another pair of Astars. Always liked the fit (extra wide) of the Astars.
