What for?
Googled best make of tools and this came up. Did mean to add some substance, but hey ho...
Snap-on - nice but over priced.
Halfords pro - good.
Teng - good quality and nice design. What I tend to go for now, though I'm definitely in the camp of slowly replacing crap stuff with better as I need it.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
Back when I was a cheeky young YTS, I was told to aim for 2 of everything; a good set, and a 'bodge' set which could be bashed bent and hit with a hammer as required. Nowadays my 'good' socket sets are halfords pro/advanced, mainly because they're complete. And my 'bodgers' are a variety of snap on, elora, stahwille, ck, and a couple of others that have survived my abuse. Spanners are snap-on for good, which have served me well. And again the 'bodgers' are various survivors like geodore, stahwille,, Gordon (Sheffield), and some seemingly indestructable ring spanners marked only 'made in ussr'.
The best place to buy (IMO) is the car boot sale. Those old tools are old because they're hard as fk, and survived years of abuse. They'll outlast many modern shiny shiny tools.

Not talking price and how much one make is more than another. just quality tool makes
I have thought of a few I have heard good things about:
Snap on ( Ihave quite a bit of these)
Teng Tools
Brit tools
Even halford professional ( And these)
So what other makes do you know and could recommened ? and yes i'm looking at what I could do with in the garage
Snap-on make some good tools, but they are over priced. Also their Blue Point range has lots of brought in stuff that is also over priced.I have thought of a few I have heard good things about:

Mac Tools has very little that they make themselves. Most of their stuff is brought in and reboxed and rebranded. Some good items but again seriously over priced. and are available with out big names for far less money
Facom, part of the same group as Mac tools. Again some good tools but seriously over priced and you can only purchase them when they are on a deal... Some items are also brought in and are available with out big names for far less money
Britool. Once a very good brand. Brought out by Facom who was then brought out by Stanley Black and Decker, who also own Mac Tools. Britool in now budget brand that sees its prices being increased so that people see it as a premium brand. But the quality is not there IMHO. Many of their product seem to be branded with other people names on it. I would guess that Britool might not make its own tools at all any more. Probably going down the same production line as Halfords stuff.
TengTools. Some good items and some rubbish.
Halfords. Ok but there are a lot of brands that seem to have identical items.
To be honest there are lots of good tools out there at reasonable prices. From my experience I would not be paying Mac Tools prices.

I bought a few supposedly second-hand Britool spanners etc. off the bay of evil that I'm convinced are forgeries; the Britool logo is as crisp as if it's just been put in with a CNC machine (which it probably has) but the forging (if indeed it is forged and not cast) quality is sh!t, full of craters and with rough edges. Now if I can't fondle it, I don't buy it.

I only use Snap-On, yes it's expensive but you only buy it once. If a 10 year old screwdriver snaps or a torx bit rounds off etc, they just swap it. And at the end of the day, I'm worth it
Holy thread revival batman...>>>but you only buy it once.<<<<<this was the bit that prompted me to reply as they are the exact words Dave Frith my 1st snapon man say in 1989 or 90 when he was selling me a 15 inch 32 teeth 1/2 ratchet for £48, that was a LOT of money then as i only charged £2.75 pr hr back then, it got a lot of use and a new middle every 3 or 4 month (was working 80-90 hr a week)..after a time my work evolved so was doing less spannering i not used it and as i not see snappy it sat with a broken middle at the back of the chest for a long time ..fast forward to approx 3 or 4 year ago i went to get a new middle for it but told parts are now not available anymore so i say thats good then Dave frith say when i buy it new i will never have to buy another ratchet again.....err no snap on will only knock of my original £48 so leave me with still £55 to pay...i say NO.. that original £48 was more than 2 days pay back then and i was told what i was told and there's a principle involved...so went home and listed 5 or 6 snap on ratchets on fleabay..

Bugger all wrong with halfords pro.
Only downside is now you need a receipt for their "life time guarantee" which is a pain in the arse.
On the one occasion that the smallest ratchet in my set died, I took it there, and they just gave me a replacement. No receipt needed. YMMV, ofc.Only downside is now you need a receipt for their "life time guarantee" which is a pain in the arse.
