Just had my first ever ride on bike through the get on scheme. Enjoyed it but was concentrating hard. Pillion ride was more fun. I seemed to pick up moving off well but figure of 8's were far trickier- trying to balance clutch, rear brake and throttle. Was looking to do das but just found out my job is going! But will seriously consider advantages of biking for commuting to next job in terms of costs, time, parking in city centre etc

Im in nearly the same boat as you op iv just turned 21 and was thinking of doing the direct access course but some of the servicing costs are putting me off a bit

Same as me, the DAS instructor gaffer taped my fingers together to stop me 2 finger braking..

In all honesty, the basics which are 90% of the servicing i.e. oil and filter change, adjust chain etc are really straightforward (and I say that as someone who booked his first bike in to get the chain tightened up! - a 5-10 min job now)

Get something semi-sensible and you can run a big bike quite reasonably

This probably won't happen until next year, first the MR2 needs to go, then I need to get my boring daily beater, then the bike!

Go for it, a decent 400 is plenty quick enough, I had one (ZXR400 L1) as my first bike (because 600cc bikes were too expensive to insure) and kept it about 3 years, I never got bored of the performance.
