Following last weekends sucessful day out at Zolder in Belgium, I now need some new tyres for my 5 ltr Chim. I looked around at the cars at Zolder and noted quite a few were running TOYO tyres. I have just browsed the Bridgestone (SO-3 PPs) and TOYO(T1-S) pages on the web and cannot find (they might be there!!) the correct tyre sizes for my car. The handbook says 215/50ZR15 front and 235/50ZR16 rear. Can anyone tell me what will happen if I run 225/50ZR15's front and 245/45ZR16's on the back? What tyres are now recommended by TVR for the 5Ltr Chim?

You'll get a *bit* more grip & have a *bit* heavier steering.

Toyo don't make ZR rated 15 inch tyres only VR rated which are not the original factory spec and are illegal. Go with the S03s unless Toyo have magiced some up. There is a list of the tyre sizes and changes that have been fitted to the cars in the bible.

Confused. What's illegal about VR rated tyres?

VR tyres are rated up to 149 mph, your Chimp has a top speed as quoted by TVR as 167 mph - therefore they are not suitable for the car (& before anyone says "but I never drive over 69 mph..... It doesn't make any difference)

So you can answer the 'S03's are ok on the original wheels, but no good on larger ones' question........

Following on the "illegal" comment, when I bought mine the insurer asked about the tyres and confirmed that the wrong rating would invalidate my insurance.

By the way, for anyone interested, Direct Line, Fully Comp, £150 excess accepting a fault claim within the last three years was £670. Phoning round that was a bargain. They offer No Claims protection for just over £100 and the roadside assisitance was only £80 for the year.

If the speed limit is 70mph tops, why would this make a difference to what insurers think?

If you are over that speed and Mr Plod proves it, you're stuffed no matter what rating your tyres are ...

The speed rating is also about the acceleration, decceleration and lateral forces applied to a tyre, not just the theoretical top speed of the car. Hence the requirement to have a tyre of a construction (and speed rating) matched to the performance of the car.

Not that this stopped a main TVR dealer fitting the wrong tyres to my Griffith, but that's a different story...

(two brand new unwanted 15" VR rated TOYO's with 200 miles wear in my garage if anyone is interested....)

because the tight-fisted gits will look for ANY excuse not to pay out, and there's precisely nowt you can do about it. They'll check a crashed TVR for engine, exhaust, suspension, and brake mods that you havent informed them of, irrespective of their effect on performance. Be warned....

That's a bit unfair?

If you haven't informed them of mods, why should they pay out? It's OK to commit FRAUD now?(you have entered a contract)Same with car in an unroadworthy state, not to manufacturers spec?

You will get much more goodwill out of both, if you play it straight. (I'm hopefully getting something from TVR, 3 years out of warranty)

People that do mods, are profiled as people that are a bigger risk generally. (think max power)Thus pay more.

That sort of attitude just puts up the premiums for the rest of us.

The good insurers are very FAIR, I have had more and better work done than I expected them to wriggle out of.
