Hi, can someone conclusively tell me the purpose of the tiny little thumbnail sized black box that hangs on a pigtail wire at the Chimaera fuel pump?

The pigtail wire simply goes to ground at the fuel pump mounting stud on the chassis.

Is it a resistor for the fuel pump?

Or some sort of suppressor/ferrite to try to limit the fuel pump generating radio interference?

Thanks in advance, Dave.

I was under the impression it was for radio interference.

I have an idea idea

If you ask me it saves the contact life in the FP relay and suppresses voltage spikes/noise things like ECU's that take low voltage signals don't like noise scratchchin the FP draws a sizeable chunk of juice starting up the radio suppression is just another bonus although not necessary wink if it was for radio suppression purposes only then the alternator heater motor & wiper motor would follow suit nerd

Interesting Simon, spikes/noise you say ears

So lets just say it wasn't connected scratchchin

What symptoms might you expect; say if you had a Canems Dual Fuel ECU for example wink

Spikes/noise you say, very interesting nerd

The problem with that gizmo is the wire is very thin so I removed when the Cerbera pump was fitted.

If anyone finds one with a thicker cable please contact me ..

For what its worth I would just fit a conventional points dizzy style condenser/cap back to the fuel pump + and Ground - chances are Dave it will make no difference but it wont do any harm either wink I use something like this because mine fell to pieces some time back too http://www.onlineautomotivesolutions.co.uk/82-93-n... the exact value is not important in this case IMO cool

I wonder if this is the reason for my voltage offsets on the megasquirt.

Where do you live ? I`m coming over with the car to do some dyagnostic wiring checks .

Thing is if there is a voltage offset everything else must be out such as trigger wheel settings etc etc etc .

Just bought one of those condensers ,does it just replace the wire from the negative on the pump to the ground (chassis) or do I have two leave the ground in and run both .

It will be there to suppress electrical noise generated by the commutator and brushes as it rotates more than any back emf generated as the pump switches on and off. If you want to suppress arcing across relay contact as you switch heavy inductive loads, you would put the cap' across the relays contacts where the arc occurs. If you dont have it fitted to the pump its more likely to produce noise on any audio equipment.

Good point Mark wink I overlooked it don't go across the + - terminals hence it will have no influence on relay contact life whistle Daz your WB offset will have no influence on your sensor inputs all things being equal (not seen your install) certainly not trigger wheel tooth offsets nerd

Wire to FP + and the body to a good clean earth i.e one of the fuel pump studs, same as the original really wink

Why fuel pump + why not - seems a bit weird

Because if you go FP - to chassis ground its the same thing Daz rolleyes you wont be suppressing/cleaning FA scratchchin

Well when I took the old one off the black metal block thing was bolted to the chassis , the thin black ground wire went to the negative side of the pump .
The live came from the relay to the positive side of the pump .

I`m confused .. Just thought I would be removing the ground cable from the pump for the condenser, then bolt the condenser part to the chassis
