following on from the thread on the 4.5 as an everyday pleasure, i'm looking at getting a 5.0 but there seem to be many more 4.5 arround in the spec i'm looking for, so the question is should I 'settle' for a 4.5 or take the plunge and go for the 5.0, ... would you really appreciate the differences as the car will never be on a track...?? any comments would be much appreciated, am going to buy as soon as the mionsoon season passes... so hopefully very soon...

thanks everyone

I have been told that the only real world difference between the 4.5 and the 5.0 is all in the early part of the rev range so you only really notice it under heavy acceleration.

As a daily driver though the 4.5 is probably a better choice as its a little less 'raw'.

only noticeable difference is even more torque - but both are awesome, the 4.5 being slightly more driveable in the wet for the same reason. I know a couple of 4.0 owners who traded up to the 4.5, I think the torque difference is more noticeable on this step than betweem 4.5 and 5.0. But having owned neither (Tamora), only driven, someone's bound to correct me!

There is no 'settling' for a 4.5! Our 4.5 Chimaera is a fantastic car! And it can be used as a daily driver straightforwardly.

I have heard that in terms of practicality for regular use there is little difference between a 4.5 and a 5...5 owners correct me?

The 5 is certainly a more powerful car - no doubt about it - but the 4.5 has more than enough grunt in comparison to almost everything on the road so...

Drive 'em both - and plenty of each if you can. Then buy the one you like most. I wouldn't worry particularly whether it was a 4.5 or a 5 myself - although I'm sure some would disagree..

I've never driven the 4.5 but my 500 is frantastic. I don't really think it matters too much between the two both sufer from the same daily use problems of fuel guzzling and water leaks.

No better smile per mile though.

I have a 500 and think that I could drive it everyday.(I use it in the wet too - shock horror!). I don't however drive it everyday as it keeps the insurance down. I am not sure I would like to "have" to drive it everyday of the winter too though. At this time of year it would be cheaper to have sold my second car and used the money to pay for the insurance hike.

Doesn't really help your 4.5 - 5.0 evaluation, soz!

Don, I'm in the process of changing my SLK and am 99.9% sold on a 4.5 or 5.0 chimaera. However, I have also looked at the Boxster. Seeing as you've had both, which do you prefer and if money wasn't an issue which would you give up first?

sorry to butt in but I hated my 996 and love my Tamora for what it's worth. TVRs are a totally different experience.....

If you got a 4.5, would you be forever wondering what a 5.0 was like? If so, I suggest you get a 5.0 straight off.

Oh, and I'm biased

I have had my 500 for three months and I never intended to use it every day but I just can't go back to driving a normal car (176bhp) and it is brilliant. It is a little tail happy in the wet if you are reckless but if driven sensibly it's a lot of fun and in the dry you can't beat it!

I have driven 4.0, 4.5 and the 500 I found the 4.0 and 4.5 to be very similar in performance but the 4.5 was an easier drive due to the low end torque but seemed no quicker than the 4.0 (expects flaming). However the 5.0 is a different beast altogether and all I can suggest is go out and drive all three and buy the one that feels right to your driving style.

Try try try before you buy.

Cheers that's my 2p worth.

A very happy 500 owner!

Yup, my only means of transport (unless I steal the Moggie )

Still, keeps Mr. Optimax very happy.

A ride is in order for Matt & er indoors at the next event methinks - that should do it .

You're not both coming down to deepest, darkest Bagshot tonight for the 'M3 Meet' by any chance are you ....

I drove a 4 & 4.5 back to back when looking to buy and found a very noticeable difference in performance between the two (hence I bought the 4.5). It appears that you either drove a duff 4.5 or an exceptional 4!!

An event soon though definately, thanks mate!

You must have driven a very good 4.0 then - when I was test driving cars, I found that there was a marked difference between 4.0s & 4.5s, with the 5.0 being a bit better than the 4.5
Don't forget... torque is what gives you acceleration, so more torque low down gives more acceleration low down

cheers,

If you even think you might want a 5.0L then don't buy anything else !!! I had a 4.0L for 13mts and spent 12 of those looking for the 5.0L nightmare to find (a decent one in the colours I wanted and 99 onwards) but well worth it imho 4.0L was about as fast as the 4.5 but the 5.0L is in another league and then you can modify it even further 400bhp here we come and 0-60 in under 4s !!!!!
