And if you added an off map I might just keep up with you. Clever that graph or what. thumbup he has like three engines hehe
You have hit on the main reason I went Emerald (apart from the obvious things like wasted spark and mapped ignition and fuel, smooth idle and better fuel consumption, as you have with the MBE).

To me, my car is two quite different cars -
1. the road car i drove up to Scotland at the weekend, nice smooth power delivery and a LOT quieter than my old 5 litre used to be, thanks to the turbo being a silencer in the exhaust. No sudden boots up the backside, just a nice car to toddle in up the motorway, up the A68 (what a driving road, but watch out for the speed cameras once over the border), and around the lanes in the Borders and the Yorkshire dales.
2. The track day car, where I want max power on every straight.

So having a nice alloy switch discretely placed where I can find it by feel on the side of the steering column, that allows me to switch maps without even lifting off, never mind stopping, is perfect so that i can choose which car i am driving at any given time - or can ask for the extra power when I want it.

There is a choice of three maps, and for now I have a lower powered track day map as map 2, with Cadwell Park and Oulton Park in mind. But if I find I just don't use it, then it could be a pops and bangs map, or a bigger boost map - my car could make 425 bhp at say 10 psi or 475 bhp at 15 psi, if i wanted to risk the engine etc. But as i have not upgraded anything other than clutch, injectors and fuel pump, I am not sure it would be a wise move.

It won't be long before you whack it upto full on track. Better keep them brakes in good order.

All I can say is I'm getting old,,, I like the idea of quiet and that draws me towards it!! Nah, better exhaust, phew I nearly cracked then hehe

I liken it to Peter having a big one from his north European blood line and you lot are blowing it up with bugger knows what and most of it silicone biggrin

I love these Turbo's now if I'm honest I've totally changed my mind. thumbup

So were you going fast enough to take off on the crests on the long, long straight bit? Or did you bottle it? scratchchin

"Handbrake" was in the passenger seat.

I mentioned the trip back in February, asked her if she wanted to come, and she said "lovely, yes please".
I have now had the stitches removed from the head injury I got when I fell over in shock at her wanting to come in the TVR for something that didn't involve less than 30 miles and serious shopping.

I have to say that the Tuscan seats and car being a lot quieter with the turbo, and now looking like I occasionally wash it, made the trip a pleasure for her, and she made a few new friends among the TVR crowd.

Proof, if it were needed:

Friday fish supper in Jedburgh (I married a Catholic)

All the TVRs lined up on Saturday morning (there's a few more off-shot)

And proof I do wash the car occasionally (SWMBO can be seen texting our daughter):

Lovely colour, ( the car, not handbrake! ).

My brother is moving down to Hartland Point in North Devon in two weeks time so he will probably see more of me now as I prepare for the first journey down there in the chim!

looking forward to seeing all these upgrades on the chims please keep me in the loop regarding track days i know my little 198 bhp wedge will be somewhat overshadowed but its quite quick in the corners

Fairly sure we will have a get together on a track near you this summer. I want to test my straight line acceleration now I have more bhp and torque, and it's time we saw how quick Phazed is now and how delightful MPoxon's organ pipe exhaust sounds.

If nothing else, Matt P and I are threatening to do the TVRCC track day at Cadwell Park in early September, which is a circuit which suits good handling over top speed. I am sure a few others can be persuaded to come along.

Spent the evening finishing off enhanced breathing system with 3rd rocker cover take-off evacuated by pre-turbo inlet depression (now got two ports), intercepted by a second proper oil separator/catch tank - really all added clutter I did not want but needs must (at least until I re-ring the engine).

Then re-bled cooling system (again), went for a drive and...... the bugger is still chucking the swirlpot contents into the expansion tank and venting loads of gas - also getting spontaneous temperature spikes so obviously airlocking despite bleeding efforts. Given I cannot see any coolant escaping anywhere, am reluctantly thinking maybe have a HG issue or maybe a tiny air-leak that is only drawing in for some weird reason (most obvious suspect has to be the new compression fitting on the back of the inlet manifold)..... I really do not want to pull the manifold yet again and am supposed to be using the car for Le Mans next week mad

At least the front main seal seems to be sorted even if the rear is weeping once again...

Sounds like a real nightmare Gary!

Are you running a fairly high boost to cause these problems?

Friend of mine thought he had porous block issues, constant issues with air in the coolant, then discovered his brass stopper had a hairline crack in it, and the washer was stuffed, so the engine was sucking air into the cooling system. Changed both and it's now fine again

It's certainly an unwelcome challenge!

I'm not sure what high boost is but it's a serious turbo and the wick is up a bit now I have some sense of what it is (or was) doing... I deliberately started with a higher mileage, but still ok, engine on the basis that if I could make it work on that, a new build should be bullet proof.

However, it has 146+k miles on it now so wear is inevitably an issue, albeit the cooling issue is a new one and has only arisen since doing the full fat heater rail delete. I think it's certain the problem lies with the air/water tightness of the new fitting right on the bottom of the inlet manifold, which seems to be allowing air in without visible signs of water escaping (it's not really visible directly). As Simon will know after a good natter earlier, it clearly is forming air pockets and did some alarming (and very swift) temperature swings last night - 110+ from 76 or so in the blink of an eye gets your attention I can tell you.

Good news is a bit of tinkering (redoing hose clipped joints mainly) seems to have improved things a great deal tonight (no repeats of the swings but still spat some coolant from the expansion tank); so will see what the levels look like tomorrow.

Really weird thing is my heater now works properly. I mean it is hot when turned on.... and cold (I mean cold) when turned off. It's never done that for as long as I've had the car - ie from 2001!

As far as the seals go, this engine has always been a sweaty one. I'm regularly having to change gaskets and seals, the rear main and crucifix ones were done last summer when I did the concentric clutch release conversion (still going strong), yet is allowing oil past again. Worn rings, which I must assume I have given the mileage, must increase the probability of blow-by but I think that has always been an issue so can't say the turbo has really made anything worse. Happily, the breather set up does seem to be effective as far as I can tell (bloody ought to be, the time and effort that has gone into it), but I'll only really know if I rig up a sensor to measure internal gas pressure - will deffo do this on the next iteration.

Although I have had my share of issues, the thing goes like stink; has been generally reliable (and it's normally been my fault when it hasn't), and still makes me smile so it's not in danger of being weighed in yet smile

It does need to get me to the south of Normandy next week however, otherwise we will be having a Basil Fawlty chapter in our relationship wink

Emission´s are allmost like cat engine.. CO 0.85% and HC 208ppm at 700rpm idle speed.. Camshaft is only Kent M256 and heads are home ported stage 4XXX. Still running std pump fuel 98E..
