Very impressed with the lighting, as you say not blinding light, but certainly enough to light everywhere in the boot.
Had one of those moment's when fitted and boot shut ......is it off? So opened a couple of times to check laughbit like having remote opening on a car, walk away and go back to see if its locked.

Can someone do an idiots guide to connecting the reed switch....??

I've identified the live to the interior light, I've fed a wire through the boot to the gap behind the seat..... But now what??

Switched live from courtesy light >>>>>
>>>> reed switch >>>>>
>>> boot solenoid wire

Cant recall the colour of the boot opener wire (RB rings a bell but I have doubts!) but its stuck behind the carpet of the wing up near the channel from filler to rear light. Just put the reed switch near where you splice into the wire (its easier to swipe near the boot shut line than bend down to the rear light IMHO).

Thats basically it Andy, but I don't like the idea of the boot taking power from the courtesy light circuit... I switcheed a relay using the courtesy light to supply the reed switch. Side benefit was taking fused battery +&- to the boot for the relay power (which gets connected to the reed switch) which I have a connector on so I have a handy charge & test point in the boot.

Personally I think its a waste of time these days as replacement alarms with integral boot openers are as cheap as chips (fish is bloody expensive as well hehe )

^^^^^mmmmm I think you may have a point...... Worked fine for 5 or 6 tries.......then the switch stuck and gave a constant supply to the solenoid thus burning it outrolleyes

I was just lazy and wired up some led strip lights to the feed for the number plate lights, yeah the boot lights up whenever the lights are on but you can't see that from the outside

So, it's 2017 and the Chimaera boot open button is still causing some consternation!

I have the magneting reed switch but where can I take a live feed from? The Numberplate lights only light up when the main lights are on and there is no other interior light in the boot.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks!

Why not have a rocker switch button above the number plate ? I have. Means that I unlock the car, press the button, open the boot. Like every other car on the planet. No extra key fobs, etc.

I used to have the remote boot release from Carl Baker but removed this. I still have the remotes and control box if anyone wants them.

Rich,

I'd be happy to go for a rocker switch but need to find a wire to take it from which is only live when the car is unlocked. As I say, my number plate lights only come on when the main headlights are on. Any ideas?

Thanks again,

Andrew

I found some time ago on here that someone had fitted micro switch the the door lock unit.
This then would give you an "unlocked" live wire you are looking for.
Maybe an idea. idea

Thread resurrection!

I'm using the coronavirus lockdown to get some jobs done that I've wanted to do for some time, and have fitted a small push button above the number plate. It looks quite neat, and is barely noticeable.

The problem (being a TVR) is the wiring. I followed the information in some of the previous posts, and used the purple interior light feed to power the new switch. However, it transpires that the purple wire is permanently live.

I had assumed that either the wire was dead when the car was locked, or it went dead shortly afterwards (after the courtesy light delay). I now find that the courtesy light delay function is acting on the earth side of the interior light, not the power feed to it.

So, either my car has an electrical problem, or is wired differently to the other cars (meaning that I now need to find another live feed that is off when the car is locked).

Anyone else had a similar problem?

As mentioned in the post above yours

Fit a micro-switch in the drivers door that will power the rear button when the door is unlocked

Better still, a 5 wire door lock solenoid has built in switches for the lock and unlock positions

The wiring of your courtesy light is correct, with a permanently live +12v and the light being switched on by an earth.

Hi Guys -

New Canadian member here with brand new (to me) 1996 Chimaera.

Needless to say, I was slightly taken aback with TVR's approach to door/trunk opening/security. Heck, I was used to going to MG/Triumph swap meets where you could buy ignition and trunk keys for your or even your buddy's car....lol

Anyway, I had an embarrassing moment the other day when I took it to the mechanic for our requisite safety certification prior to changing ownership/plates. Now, I have a bad left leg with limited knee movement, so to get out of the car, I have to rely on being able to lean on the center tunnel.....you guessed it, right where that evil central locking button is.

So leaving the car running and slamming the door to go get the mechanic....you can see where this is headed...In any case, there we both were, staring at this thing called a TVR (he'd never seen/heard of one, but allowed that it sounded nice..). Anyway, he got his articulated car break-in stick and proceed to try to a) push the central lock button, b) rotate the door opener and when those failed to c) press the under dash trunk release which thankfully he managed to hit on his first stab... If the ignition had been off, we would have been pooched. (I only found out about the hole behind the rear licence plate plaque after researching it....

Anyway, long story short, I fitted a hidden push button (in parallel with the dash mounted unit) on the rear licence plate plaque which is wired directly to the battery - so as long as the battery switch has not been turned off, I have ingress to the trunk - and therefor to the manual door pull...

I also plan on rewiring the under dash pushbutton to work without ignition power - maybe off the cig lighter...It would be a lot more convenient to be able to operate the dash switch independent of the ignition....

True. That sounds useful but anyone can lean in, push the button and gain access to your boot without you around!

I prefer to have a remote boot release on your key fob. Research it on Google or Contact Dave from HF Solutions who will do you a kit that you can fit yourself. Piece of cake!
