Pipercross or K&N?
Discussion
The K&N web site says this about cleaning.
4. How often do I need to clean my K&N air filter?
If you have not experienced a decrease in mileage or engine performance, chances are your filter is fine and does not yet need cleaning. To be more specific, the filter does not require cleaning if you can still see the wire screen on the entire air filter regardless of how dirty it may appear. When the screen is no longer visible some place on the filter, it is time to clean it. When used in normal paved road, street or highway conditions, our replacement air filters that fit in the factory air box should require cleaning every 50,000 miles and our large conical filters on an intake system should require cleaning every 100,000 miles. When used in dusty or off-road environments, our filters will require cleaning more often. We recommend that you visually inspect your filter once every 25,000 miles to determine if the screen is still visible.
Personally I couldn't leave mine for anything like those intervals before cleaning it. I remember reading somewhere that the filter can only be cleaned a limited no. Of times before needing replacement.

Any guidance please as to:
How regularly to clean the K&N?
How to clean it?
With what to oil it?
Mine was fitted at the car's service, so I haven't seen the instructions for use, and I do a fair mileage.
1. Rinse off loose flys & debris with a hose on low pressureHow regularly to clean the K&N?

2. Make up a bucket of tepid soapy water, I use a squirt of Tesco value washing up liquid
3. Wash the filter in the bucket plunging it up & down to agitate & remove the debris
4. Rinse off with the hose, again on low pressure and from the inside out so you don't trap the dirt back in the cotton filter media
5. Shake off excess water & allow to dry overnight, I sneak mine in the airing cupboard but a hot sunny day works faster
6. Re-oil
I used to use ATF to re-oil which works well, if you look at the official K&N oil it's pink just like AFT & I suspect that's because it is ATF.
However ATF is difficult to apply sparingly so if you over load the filter it becomes dirty & clogged quite quickly, last time I cleaned mine I re-oiled it with GT85 spray lubricant which allows a lighter application of oil.
The GT85 seems to have worked well but this time I may go back to ATF applied with one of these:

Just add some Rocket leaves & shaved Parmesan and you're good to go
I've just taken the old pipercross off to replace with the new one and I'm not sure the old one was actually a pipercross. It was very manky and the foam was thicker that the pipercross I've just put on. Likewise the new one has the pipercross logo at the end but the old one didn't. It had some printing that had faded. I think it said S200 OONY

Only downside I remember about the K&N was reports of thin film of oil slowly covering any sensors you might have in the intake... (dependant on how much oil/how many times you re-oil it).
Obviously no oil with PiperX, so not an issue.
yep Piper X should also be oiled too otherwise they don't work so can suffer the same misting on hotwire sensors and air temp sensors fitted to many modern day vehicles.Obviously no oil with PiperX, so not an issue.
