Changed all the plugs, suppressors, leads, cap, arm and coil today..(all proprietary parts).went to start and Morto.
I know the firing order but the mark I put on the old cap to show number 1 fell off.

Looking at the dizzy from the top is number 1 the first from the left of the dizzy clip that is by the vac canister?

Thanks

In theory no. 1 lead could be in any position on the distributor, it depends on how the dist. was fitted in the first place. However in practice it has to be fitted so that the vac. advance unit doesn't clash with anything else, so this means somewhere towards the front on our engines.

Standing in front of the car my no.1 lead is the second to the right of the distributor spring clip. But, I have pictures of another car in my file where it is the first from the right of the clip.

The safest way to tell is to remove no.1 spark plug, stick some tissue in the hole (attached with a piece of string so it can't be sucked into the engine) and revolve the engine by hand (or push the vehicle in first gear) until the tissue is blown out. As the dist. revolves at 1/2 engine speed you may have to go round twice to achieve this effect. You are now on the firing stroke. Note where the rotor arm faces and this is no.1.

Good luck.

Have you checked you have a spark at the 'king lead? You don't say what works and what doesn't

Saw something last time I was at my TVR guy's workshop. He was struggling to keep a Griff running, and was twisting the distributor to try to get the advance right. I was deputed to sit in the car and keep it idling - it stalled without my hoof.

I will see if I can get a decent pic. It's going dark.

Mine is a 5 litre, but running a 4 litre dizzy. Wasn't aware they were different.

Pic below. I stuck a thin screwdriver blade into the no 1 lead rubber (no damage - but you can see it in the pic.

Starting from the clip, going to the right (anticlockwise), the first lead is one of the even numbered ones, the second lead is number 1, and it is straight behind the right hand side of the vacuum thingy you can see in the pic.

My own mistake as I had taken number 1 where number 8 was and went clockwise from there... so totally out
