From memory I held the pinion in the vice using two bits of softwood to clamp. It was then held easily. I marked out the hexagon on the cut off top of the shaft and carefully cut down the sides with a hacksaw with a new blade fitted fractionally oversize. I then filed it carefully one flat at a time until I had a nice fit to the UJ clamp.

Out of interest we are going to my sons house in Horsham tonight as it is his birthday.

Likewise I'll have a bash this weekend and if not I'll come over. On the other hand if there's others interested maybe we should all go and compare notes. Party!

ETA

Had a chat with the machine operator today as the head man was out, he reckoned there wasn't much meat on the shaft to make a hex and sucked air through his teeth, in the end agreed it was doable.

I took it away to have a play over the weekend, but in the meantime found this hex calculator online that is quite neat:

https://www.omnicalculator.com/math/hexagon

It's 18mm dia., you need 19.6 mm for a perfect 17 mm hex so it's going to be tight for material removal to make each flat (I knew that anyway from some basic trig)

Had a lovely afternoon in the garage filing away patiently, but must say I am pretty pleased with the results. Firstly I cut the shaft to length, then I superglued a 14mm nut onto the end of the shaft to give me a guide for the filing, then gently filed away until the hex was formed and the Fiesta UJ is a nice snug fit on the shaft. The hex worked out to be about about 16.5 mm AF

Good job!

Take the photograph with your phone sideways or go to edit the photographs and you can turn them 90°.

Nice. Did you drift out the pin and remove the splined end first?

How much stub do I need to leave?

I didn’t touch the pin, but I did arrange the hex so that the pin went point to point rather than across the flats. I cut the shaft so that it is 40 mm long from the rubber dust shield. I am using a Ford UJ off a Fiesta, just check that the shaft goes right up inside where it clamps, better to have it a bit longer than too short, although it is more to file

Hello, you lovely lot...

Jumping in on this thread as I'm doing this conversion now and I've put together a spreadsheet of all the parts I've bought and where I've bought them from. Mostly all of this information has come from this thread, so thank you all!

You can all view it (if it helps.) I'll keep updating it as I go over the next week or so.

Did a bit of light filing on my lunch break yesterday.

Like a glove biggrin:

Spacers & bolts ordered from ebay and brackets & bushes from ICP - now back in stock. Guess they've been cleaned out by TVR owners!

Old rack comes out on Monday and then off to the local auto hydraulics place with it and the pump hoses for new hoses to be made up and adapters sorted.

Next job is going to be the valley gasket, coolant flush and temperature sender / gauge pairing...

I have this conversion.. It doesnt suit everyone because the steering is very light ..Mine runs off the original pump not electric .What it does need is bump stops .

Hi Daz. My conversion is pretty much indistinguishable from the original TVR power steering system. I do run it off an electric pump but I don’t think that really makes a difference.

Just to recap, my original TPR power steering was light.

As for stocks, you can fit these nylon stops very easily. Best to remove them from your original rack and then fit them to the scooby.

It was the power steering rack especially made for TVR. It was probably a copy of some other make but unknown and parts are not available.

Hi Peter. Can you recall what thickness rack stops you used, I am sure I read previously in this thread that 7mm thick each side was about right. The original ones in my NON PAS rack are about 22mm each side.

Sorry, can’t be helpful in this case because I didn’t fit any. My tyres which are 235 wide do touch the inner arches on full lock but I am just careful! I probably will fit some as I’m sure I have some on the shelf somewhere. It was just one of those things that I never got around to!

I will try the 7 mm spacers and see how that goes. Hopefully I will be able to do a dry run this weekend and fit the rack and check clearances.

Please see below for some info I was given a little while back about the different type of racks that are available. This might be a reason why some peoples steering feel lighter/different than expected. My rack is 2.7 turns lock to lock without any rack stops fitted. However I am comeing from a NON PAS car so have no knowledge of the feel of the original TVR system.

Don’t know if you’re knowledgable on Impreza racks - the Subaru part numbers are a nightmare - but, if not, the rack you want is from the GC8 classic, 1992 to 2000, or very early GD8 blobeye. The power racks come in 3 ratios. First, the standard WRX and lower spec cars sold in the UK, 3.2 lock to lock, 16.5:1 ratio. Second, the WRX STI grey imports, not sold in the UK, 2.7 lock to lock, 15:1 ratio. The Prodrive specials also had this rack. Third, the very very rare rack from the STI Type RA and 22B. These are 2.25 lock to lock, 12:1 ratio. The chances of finding one of those are slim to none and then modifying the pinion would be sacrilege!!
Hope this helps
Dave

There are a couple of parts I am haveing real trouble sourcing, and I wonder if anyone can help me out. The bits in question are the two flat plates that secure the power steering pump into the ali casting that bolts onto the block, one plate is on the front and has about six holes in it, and there is another one ot the rear with 4 bolt holes. I have tried all the usual TVR suppliers and some LR suppliers but no one seems to have such a thing. If any one has anything like this they are up for selling please let me know. Or alternatively if I could get a tracing and thickness of the plates I would be able to get them made up.
Many thanks Kev.

What I do like is how easy it is to drive and since Matt did the four wheel alignment it feels like a more modern car .No bumpsteer ,it just feels good .
Next job is to lighten the clutch and that will be the icing on the cake .smokin
