From Cerb to Chim
Discussion
Sold the Cerb late last year and been looking for another TVR. Was lining up an early Griff (4.3) but after reading the article on Powers website re the turbo upgrade, decided a Chimaera 400 was the way.
Bought the car yesterday and now arranging to get it to Powers for the turbo, cam kit and 500 clutch.
To say I am excited is an understatement....

What power are they quoting you will get with the Turbo fitted? and have you looked at all the alternative options? Bought the car yesterday and now arranging to get it to Powers for the turbo, cam kit and 500 clutch.

Welcome to the club N7
I too came from Cerb ownership. The Cerb was an animal and something that just couldn't be exploited on the UK roads. Great road presence.
But I'm enjoying my Chim just as much, maybe even more so far. A few more days of enjoying her before the tax expires and the resto begins. Can't wait.
Hope you enjoy your Chim

This is taken from powers own website:"Certainly the Turbo’s figures cannot be argued with. The 4.0 litre supercharger which I took across the Alps, from its original 190bhp and 210lb ft of torque at the rear wheels, delivered in excess of 260bhp with 260lb ft of torque. But the turbo is in another league. From its original 191bhp and 213lb ft of torque at the rear wheels, the Powers Perfomance 4.0 litre RV8 Turbo charger produces 317bhp with 380lb ft of torque running with 15 pounds of boost, or 338 bhp with a huge 427lb ft of torque at the rear wheels running with 20 pounds of boost. That is incredibly 30% more bhp than the supercharger and 64% more torque. Unbelievable! The Alps are beckoning."
The whole article is here: http://www.powersperformance.co.uk/upgrades/rv8-tu...
The only alternative I looked at was the supercharger route and the figures are in the quote too for comparison.
I selected Powers simply because they built this engine in the first place and have an outstanding reputation but I will look at the alternative shown by Siliconekid - thanks!
And thanks for the welcome. Back in the TVR madhouse....

Good old marketing departments! what a load of bks For comparison my Supercharged 4.0 LTR is producing 375BHP + 390LBS torque - and there are lots of people on this forum who will vouch for its quickness. And this is with relatively safe amounts of boost (less than TVR Power is using)

Welcome the turbo setup should give a smooooth powerful ride!
Quoted from the website - £4250 - Full Turbo kit, uprated injectors with ECU, coil packs and sensors Everything you need for the install supplied with base map ready for rolling road mapping
£150 - Uprated fuel pump and wiring
£740 - Fitting available drive in drive out
£450 - Mapping
That not £2500 - which keeps getting quoted which is just the kit, you NEED everything above for a proper installation.
oh - when you said 'smooooth' - were you being sarcastic? have you ever seen a Turbo power curve? #bumpy

Hi Mate, Excellent choice all round. I'm a fan of ALL modifications to these cars be it Turbocharging, supercharging, nitrous oxide, N/A and think the decision you have made should be respected. Dom will do a great job for you. Bought the car yesterday and now arranging to get it to Powers for the turbo, cam kit and 500 clutch.

Plus I need a clutch from a 500 to take this extra oomph. With the engine just coming to 50k a new camshaft kit is needed so those costs need to be added to the figures above.£4250 - Full Turbo kit, uprated injectors with ECU, coil packs and sensors Everything you need for the install supplied with base map ready for rolling road mapping

Clutch could be another can of worms. The 500 is limited. There are some more capable plates from AP (dont get a paddle clutch!). Or better still consider the Mcleod RST. That will be my next choice. At the moment i have an AP cerametallic plate and a rather heavy AP racing cover plate that are still holding out with 500 lb/ft going through them.@ Macdeb. Thanks!
Checking the prices the full installation from Torque V8 is £5590 (with vat I assume?).
The Powers price is £5,495 + vat so very little between them.
Plus I need a new cam kit with the engine on 50k and as advised by Dom, a clutch from a 500.
Appreciate the options suggested and any more are welcome.

I think given my last Pod run my clutch definitely is on the edge - and given that we are now looking at doing the water injection which could increase power another 20-30bhp, we should definitely investigate. Also may look into some hardcore drift-shafts as well.

A fellow SD1 owner too so I'd better listen then! The choice of clutch was Dom's but I will mention your options and see where that goes.

I go back a loooong way with SD1s but the TVR has kept me busy for the last 6 or 7 years. The choice of clutch was Dom's but I will mention your options and see where that goes.
I have a 1984 2000 in good condition that is waiting on a 4.6 to be dropped in and i am getting nack my old wide arch beast that will be receiving something rather larger
I suppose a choice of clutch depends on the abuse you intend to give it as well as the HP the boost is going to give. I drag race my TVR a lot on sticky tyres with nitrous oxide as the power boost of choice and the clutch gets a lot of stick. I guessa standard 500 could cope with over 400 bhp fine in 'normal' driving conditions.

Nicks is only a 400. I dont think hes showed the potential yet. From what ive seen he drives with a lot of mechanical sympathy.
Theres no denying Macs numbers though. Awesome. i hope he gets the new gearbox in and sorted ahead of Shakey then we will see for real whats what.
