May help you to rig up a length of cable that you can connect directly to the starter solenoid terminal when the fault happens, touching it to battery positive briefly should engage the starter motor and rule a few things out.
The simplest and error free way of checking the starter all things being equal good grounds etc thumbup and you can leave this simple circuit in place until the condition arises cool

Its a pain in the rear to run a new cable to the solenoid but if you left it connected via a piggy back spade connector, and routed it to the battery area you can use it if you get stranded until you solve the issue. You would need to insulate it safely at the battery end as it obviously would become live on cranking.
