B-b-ber BREMBOS!
Discussion
Dave left and sold his car sometime ago now.
I’m using the same pads as in the box above. 7 series from 94-01
What your saying makes sense as my 324 mm Focus discs have no wear marks around there outside edge ( about 2-3 mm ) and also on the inside edge of about 3 mm
316mm discs using these pads wear marks would cover complete disc.
It’s not really an issue and I’ve seen many an o/e disc and pad with very similar disc coverage.
Part of an old mechanics brake maintenance tasks was to use a big screwdriver wedged inbetween disc and Caliper and spin the disc to scrape rust away from outside edge. He did this on almost all vehicles so not all pads fit discs entirely.
To clarify the 7 series 94-2001 pads as pictured above fit these callipers.

It’s a tight fit but if you can make it work very nice and subtle.
I’d like that set up for sure but since using soft RS and other equivalent tyres are available I find the front road holding and comfort level on 17’s is really very good so haven’t bothered looking into it.
That and Covid restrictions and raging laziness

Excellent! Thank you for all the info! Sorry to hear about Dave selling up, I've seen so much useful info on here from him.
Yes. Sad loss although his constant mention of his MPG return figures using LPG used to have me biting my lip somedays I miss him and I’m sure many others do too.
ETA a friend had the Brembo upgrade a few years before Dave started this really helpfull thread so I was well aware of it and thinking I’d do it one day.
I have to thank Dave as this thread actually provoked me into making the effort to track the parts down.
I found it such a rewarding job as tapping out the hub holes etc was all straight forward and using a half depth pinch nut on the inner side gives real confidence. Use locktite
You will notice after bleeding brakes your pedal might bite slightly lower down, say 5mm, not much and I assume it’s because you are pushing out 4 pistons so displacing more fluid.
They work great though. In fact the car is over braked in a way but in a very good way, you can regulate the pressure on the pads very finely which is pretty important on a light car. A great upgrade.
I found both Porsche and Ferrari have used these Calipers and now looking at a Nissan Skyline from the nineties at work which I also drive, the front brakes look suspiciously like the same or near as damn it Brembo’s. We are in good company with these brakes
Oh, don’t get hung up on centring the Calipers to discs. I used 1/2 mm shims to even them up almost perfectly which meant putting 2 shims on one side of the hub and 3 on the other. This caused a minor vibration!
I removed all of them as I still had clearance from caliper to disc when bolts tightened up, I reasoned the pads will wear and even out the difference which they did.
Removing the shims then mounting the brackets and Calipers direct to hubs removed vibration instantly.

Great info again! I have just ordered my discs, pads and some braided lines! Looking forward to getting fitting now after having the calipers lying around for about 6 months! If I need any help i'll be back, if not, I'll be back with photos of the finished product!I miss him and I’m sure many others do too.

Also considering doing the same, or splashing out on the AP set up from Reyland.
Does anyone know what is the maximum sized discs that can be used with the E38 Brembos? According to the Caprisport website it’s 355mm.
Still need to source a good set of E38 Brembos too….. alternatively, I may see if I can get the 18z Brembo calipers from a Porsche to work! I like a challenge.
Andrew.

I have an E38 kit which I bought from a fellow Griff owner a couple of years ago which may be available if you are interested. The only reason I didn’t use it was the callipers would interfere with my split rims so went down the Ryland AP (295) route which I have to say are fantastic and beautifully balanced.
A word of warning is the E38 callipers are quite wide so this needs to be taken into account so they don’t clout your wheel spokes depending on your wheel design, you can of course run spacers which is what I wanted to avoid. Also the discs are 328mm which I would consider the largest you would want to go without having to change the rears.
The kit I have has reconditioned callipers, new shims and pins, new boxed Brembo discs and pads plus the brackets.
Christian.

Thanks for the info. I’m currently running 18 inch RL7 with ET25 at the front, so there’s plenty of clearance between the caliper and spokes. I’ll drop you a PM as I may be interested in giving your Brembos a go!
Many thanks, Andrew.

Do you have a picture of the pads & dimensions ?
I recently picked up a pair of aluminium 4pot Brembo calipers that I‘d like to use, but am having trouble identifying them & finding pads to fit.
Where‘s a good place for help with Brembo‘s ?

Thanks Christian. Unfortunately it confirms they won‘t fit my
Calipers. I think I’ve found some Mintex pads, that I can get REALLY cheap ( road compound) & not so cheap 1144 or 1166 (they don‘t seem to show 1155 )
So I‘ve ordered some road ones to check the Fitment. The good news is the pads are used by some Ferrari‘s & Lamborghini‘s so they should be available for a while & decent quality.
