Hello CanoeSniffer, Welcome to the fold. Good to see a young enthusiast. You mention you are a mid-90's lad? Guess that make you and you Chim about the same age? hehe

I have a mate that lives in Bristol, it might be a possibility to do a detour you way if I go up to visit him this year at all. I saw your car when it was advertised, looks better now, will be nice to see you bring it right up to scratch.

That's a lovely looking car.
Seeing that view reminds me of a drive out with a few Tvr's the other week.
Owning one your in it not looking at it, I never really think about how it looks to others and only when you've got one in front and behind you at the same time do you see how fantastic they look.
Your shot reminds me of looking through the wing mirror and seeing a Chim behind me and yes it looks this good, very low, sleep, mean and purposeful. smile

Is it just the noise you miss? It's spell binding I know that much smile
I was that very Chim quote " ...looking through the wing mirror and seeing a Chim behind me..."

looking forward to another blast soon.

Hi Dan, in fact the car is two years older than I am! The years haven't been kind to either of us laugh

I'd welcome that! I can talk Tiv for hours, I'm not too far from M4 J16 if that works for you- feel free to get in touch! wavey

Agreed.....Had my lad following me a couple of weeks back in his rep box and he said it was quite odd watching all these people stopping and staring, jaws dropped, as I went past, its the noise that gets them......much better being on the inside looking out though.

Congratulations on your purchase, TVR at the age of 20 is certainly an achievement in itself. Great first post and welcome to the mad house.

I have a similar story to you, Clarkson video of the cerb race was worn out on VHS. My dad used to take me to the Motorshow when I was young which usually involved a day just looking at the TVR stand.

I went from at Civic Type R which I loved to an S2000 which I kind liked but never felt as quick as the CTR then onto a Griff 500 which solved the lack of speed issue with the S2000. I actually found the S2k a nightmare to drive in the wet it used to try and kill me on a regular basis on my morning commute. Funnily enough I find the Griff more planted in the wet... odd.

Like others have said take it easy in the wet although I am sure you know this coming from an S2k. The difference is the S2k is much easier to control when oversteering, the TVR not so much.

Don't worry about how the car looks as long as you drive it and enjoy it that is all that matters, sometimes you enjoy a car which is not pristine more as you tend to be not so precious about it.

Anthony is spot on for the track day stuff keep an eye out on these forums and join us for a track day great fun and good banter.

If you are looking at Castle Combe here is some onboard footage of mine at Combe. Be very careful of Quarry, most crashed corner out of all of the UK circuits.

I Think u will find that 25% of ALL motorsport accidents in the UK are attributed to Quarry. Strangely my favourite corner because of the insane speed I arrive at it into the braking zone. Certainly focusses your attention. I shall be there this year at least three times bring it on lick

PS Nice video and very nice driving of what looked like a nice day clap

Great video Matthew really good camera position, I have been scratching my head as to where you mounted the camera it's obviously outside the car but looks to far forward to be on the roll bar.

Thanks Perry, now where near the insane speed that you go round mind! I did quite a few laps that day but I never felt completely comfortable with that circuit, there is not a lot of runoff for a novice such as myself.

Thanks Trevor, setup is a GoPro mounted using one of the 3M adhesive mounts that comes with the camera mounted at the top of the windscreen.

Hard on the brakes, great balance;)

That video is awesome, what a noise. Loved watching the G meter, sort of reminds you of how it feels and the way the brain works it all out. smile

Your faster now too smile wil, you were at Hetel,,, like a man possessed hehe joke. Your very smooth top man thumbup
Can I hire your video services for the day. Brilliant Matt.

You know this already but getting confident with toe and heel to match rear wheel speed with engine revs will give you more confidence to push later into the braking zones and changing down

That is a really great video, awesome angle for the Griff video! Have to say the car sounds INCREDIBLE, surely that isn't audio from the GoPro location? External mic?

On that note a question to all who have posted videos so far, as all the cars have sounded the absolute dogs danglies, have any been standard or close to? Asking because although my ropey Chim does make a truly sensational noise at full tilt it doesn't feel as though it can be anything like as ferocious as all your cars have sounded (QBee, Matthew) and of course seeing as these are TVRs and we all know noise matters, can I honestly expect my (near) standard 400 to sound half as good as that on track? scratchchin

Mine in that video from the pit wall was a 5 litre V8 Developments engine, fully decatted.

One thing to remember is other people's always sound better, they tend to sound better from the outside when accelerating away and you never get to hear your own as you are sat inside it.

If you want to go louder first step is to remove the precats form the manifolds, do a google search there is plenty of info out there. The car will still pass MOT without precats so no issues there.
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Next step is to replace the Y piece with a decat Y piece, either Clive Ford or ACT. Don't be tempted to remove the cat from the original as they sound awful, also useful to keep the original just in case you need it for an emissions test.

If you want to go really loud then also sleave the rear silencers but just bear in mind you won't get near a track if you do! One of the best combos is precats out, main cat out and standard exhaust box.

In theory your should sound better if you do some of the above mods as you have carbs so you will be getting a nice induction roar as well, the standard EFI system does not give much induction noise.

My advice would be to take the precats out first as these do not do anything useful, you will instantly get a bit more noise and a few more BHPs. Exhausts are a very personal thing and different people like different sounds. Go out in as many TVRs as possible to decide which one you like best and copy their setup.

Thanks regarding the video, microphone is clipped to the rear plate. I have a better setup now with better mic and Racelogic telemetry rather than using the smartphone so the speed is more accurate.

As Matthew says below, other people's cars will always sound better as you are hearing them from the outside, whereas driving your own car the sound is obviously muted slightly by your position within the car.

My 400 was completely standard in the engine/exhaust department when I purchased it, and it was surprising the amount of owners with modified TVRs who said just how good my standard car sounded.

However I then heard Jason's car (TVRJAS on here) who has a 400 with a sleeved exhaust (but otherwise standard)- and I decided there and then I needed to get mine sleeved too, which I booked in the following day hehe

As I'm only round the corner from you (relatively speaking), once we get a dry day we'll meet up and you can have a listen to mine and see what you think. smile
