Sick and tired of my current radiator fan system constantly blowing relays and with warmer weather on the way it was time to investigate the source of the problem.... and rectify it once and for all!

I wanted to be able to set the fan on temperature but I also needed to retain my staged fan setup, now there are number of ways to get the staged fan effect and trust me I've tried a few, the thing is for reasons I won't bore you with none of them proved 100% satisfactory.

With the key issue I'd been suffering being blowing relays (contacts welding shut) I wanted to completely re-wire the system which included replacing the suspect relay holders, the solution came in the form of a Davies Craig Electronic Fan Controller.

This kit is really easy to fit & wire up, the key features are:

1. Allows you to control the temperature the fans come on

2. Starts fan one at the defined on temp, but waits 10 seconds before starting fan two (staged fan feature)

3. Staged off, first fan switched off at 5 degrees c lower than pre-set on temp, second fan switched off a few seconds later

4. LED numerical display showing real time temperature

I fitted the controller today which was very straightforward and it's working perfectly, everything you need is in the pack making it easy to achieve a really tidy installation.

And now with ignition on showing the blue LED display after the engine had cooled following testing (showing 36c)

As I have fan control already from my Canems ECU (output 1) you might think it odd I've gone for this controller kit, but in the end it made sense as I wanted to replace the suspect relay holders, relays, and also keep my staged fan setup.

Just as the advertising says it's a really straightforward and simple to fit kit, if you're still on the 14CUX and want control of your fan on temp the Davies Craig electronic fan controller is definitely worth considering, the staged fan on feature also helps to eliminate voltage drops .

This kit is proper OEM quality, it's far superior quality to the home brewed cottage industry effort normally sold for our cars, it also comes with a waterproof fuse holder (with fuse) per fan, thus ensuring complete safety.

If you're considering this controller the Davies Craig part number is DC-0444, I bought mine on eBay from JJC Race & Rally for £48.00 which I think is fair given the quality, ease of fitment and the way the system just works exactly as advertised.

Dave,
Having been out and about this weekend with a keen eye on the temp gauge, I have finally bought myself one of these to have greater control over fan operation.

Can you elaborate on where you got the +ve and ignition inputs for it?
I'm on 14CUX.

Thanks, Colin

Hi Colin, it's all in the instructions mate.

Essentially they tell you to use a switched live, it's tempting to use the fuel pump relay for this but I'd encourage you to go straight off the ignition switch instead, if you use the fuel pump relay the fans will only ever run for a few seconds when you turn the ignition back on and you want to run the fans for a while with the engine off.

You could also run it on a permanent live and let the temp switch turn the fans on and off even if you've switched the engine off and removed the key, this is how all modern cars function. The problem with a permanent live installation would be if the temp switch failed and the fans were left running until the battery became completely drained, for this reason I just followed the instructions and went for a switched live taken directly from the ignition switch.

Fitting the kit to a 14CUX Chimaera is no different from fitting it to my Canems Chimaera, or any other car for that matter, it has nothing to do with the existing TVR fan wring which is a good thing in my opinion.

I also used used this kit that puts the matched temp tender in the controller kit neatly the coolant flow, which I highly recommend by the way...

Cheers Dave, I think my challenge is going to be identifying a switched Live in the engine bay - kit hasn't arrived yet, I'll be back here begging for help after I've turned my car into a hovercraft.

Personally I'd recommend running a new wire, that said you could use whats there already, a continuity test will help.
