have don it in the chim on a fresh built T5. Must look it up but was either 0.68 or 0.63.
Would not do it again as the revs are quite low in 5th and the gap 4th to 5th is high.
Of course depending on profile and engine specs it can make sense. Went back to
the standard 0.8

Hi.

Thank you for the replies.
It seems that the larger gap between fourth and fifth would result in a loss of flexibility so maybe not such a good idea.
My car is a year 2000 and does indeed have the S10 tailhousing as standard. In attempt to cure a very slightly noisy bearing, (despite only 27K at the time) the gearbox has been out twice and "rebuilt" by two very well respected specialists.

Although I am admittedly fussy, I know if something feels right or not and on both occasions this box has never felt right after the rebuilds and the change is nowhere as smooth as it was before it was taken apart. It is surprising just how much this can spoil the enjoyment of the car. I think the term rebuild can be misleading as I think on the first occasion only the preload was adjusted and on the second only front and rear bearings got changed along with 3rd gear synchro which always seemed ok. I would expect a rebuild to at least involve new bearings throughout.

Anyway, I am still not entirely happy with the way the box works and the first to second change often involves a degree of baulking and just doesn't feel like it should. The clutch has been changed and the hydraulics bled and deemed ok.

My original question was based on the fact that I am idly wondering about the cost and fitment of a brand new box! The new ones from Tremec that we see advertised, there is one on ebay at the moment, all have the taller top gear and a differnet tailshaft.

Thanks for your comments, any more would be appreciated...

Regards Chris.
All I'll add is the 6060 is a truly wonderful feeling box and light years ahead of any T5, the one I experienced was just like my dreams of what the perfect shift should feel like. It really was a glorious thing with the shift quality dominating everything, the extra cog actually just ended up being a nice bonus.

If you're now looking at buying a brand new T5 and you're quite rightly fussy about these things (as I am), wouldn't you be better off paying the extra and nailing the job once and for all by fitting the massively superior shifting 6060?

I'm sure I read somewhere this guy is developing a 6060 conversion for his son's supercharged Chimaera?

I looked at getting a modified T5 for my car, but the cost was equal to a new TKO600 which is rated at 600 lb torque standard and is used in Corvettes and Mustangs. The best anyone could build a T5 for me was around 500lb torque absolute max' and then it's on borrowed time and I very much appreciated the honesty. The 600 that I have has as near as dammit same ratios as T5 and it feels just like a T5 too. I thought about TKO660 but cost/size/clearances didn't add up for me even though it has a rifle bolt change. I did a thread on the conversion some years ago on Major Mods'.

So those gear sets from Australia fit ok then? I remember there being a big discussion about them before but it does seem like a cost effective way to get a 3.08

I am in need of a higher diff really as I am bouncing the limiter in 4th at the end of the 1/4 mile and a reduced cruising revs would be a great bonus. Were they hard to change over?

Yeah as long as you buy the M78 series so its the correct 7.75" diameter. I ordered two of these, one for my brother and one for me. My brother has fitted his so I know they fit correctly. The smaller size crown wheels are 7.5" and can be made to fit with lots of shims but won't be as strong.

If you know anyone in Australia get it sent there .

Then remove the paper work and get them to send it as a gift to the UK.

This doesn't work, I have relatives down under and their kind presents cost me money frown
