M@H, I find this thread quite humorous!
I've been following your recent threads and know that you use PH a lot and have done a lot of backround reading before buying the Chimaera.
That's why I find it surprising that you were so far out on your mpg estimations.
As you can see from this thread all Chimaera owners are getting the same as you so it really shouldn't have been a surprise.
If you really can't afford it you should sell it. But you should make every effort to keep it as I'm sure you'll really regret selling it?
Good luck.... Andrew

Hmm... the reason I was so far out was this lot is in various previos posts:
quote:

MPG for a 4.0HC - 25-27MPG

quote:

I have been getting close to 30 on a run

quote:

I had a 93 Chimaera 400 for 1 year (4 years ago) bought with 20k on the clock and 12000 miles as my everyday car, the only fault was a weeping master clutch cylinder, I dont drive fairy footed but averaged between 25 and 30MPG (measured over tankfuls)

quote:

20 - 21 MPG is more normal, up to 26MPG on a steady run

quote:

last few weeks in my 96 chim 400, managed to consistently get over 300 miles out of a tank, about 30MPG, and thats with some blasting about too!

quote:

Been up to Oban in Scotland on holiday recently from Staffordshire and managed 27MPG over the whole trip

quote:

My 97 500 gives me between 22-24 on a long run and 15-17 around town. This seems to be pretty standard for 500's. I would have thought that the 400's would give better figures than some of those quoted here (maybe some heavy right feet out there), mor like 20 round town and 28 on a long run.

quote:

I think that on a run I get something like 27

quote:

just for info, did same run again monday. Stourbridge-guildford and back. After boring calculations, 26MPG was the outcome. 80 (ish)mph all the way with occasional bursts of (ahem, omg, ahem)mph. Good for 5 ltre

So I am less amused than you and I based my MPG estimations on other peoples historical opinions from here... never mind..

Maybe people are getting good fuel consumption from their Chimaeras. At the end of the day there are so many variables involved, length of journey, operating temperatures, terrain, traffic, drivers right foot etc etc etc.At the end of the day I don't think I would be convinced that people were getting 28 mpg out of a 4 litre high performance engine and would expect fuel consumption to be poor.It was like the "Deals on Wheels program" about buying a Ferrari for Mondeo money, Great but by the way it will cost you £8000 a year to run.Unfortunately without sounding aloof TVRs and tight budgets don't really mix.

I used to average about 17-19 in my 400, but once saw 25mpg on a steady m-way run.

Worth it though

M@H, I had a Chimaera 4.0l for 3 years and used to get high teens around town occasionally up to 25 when driving like a fanny on a motorway run!
I've read the quotes that people gave you re their mpg and find them hard to believe from my experience.
Cheers..... Andrew

Mattt, take four of the injectors out and route them back into the petrol tank.
You should double your MPG figures...

Matt,

23mpg is what I get on my average runs and my driving style is by no mean economic - I just love to floor it
Basically, driving at 90/100 mph on the m'ways, including regular quick bursts just for the sake of it I get 22-23mpg. I am convinced that I could get 28mph+ out of the car if I wanted to - read in last edition of Sprint that someone got 28+mpg out of a 4.5 Cerbie.

Not much help sorry, just sharing my experience.

Cheers

I know you have sold the puma, but why don't you consider buying a banger for everyday use (especially in Winter!). That's exactly what I have done. I bought a 1.1 litre Fiesta (F- reg.) for £600 almost 2 years ago. It's cheap as chips to run as you can service it yourself and mine gets 45mpg. I get approx. 20mpg out of my 4.0HC, which does include a few blasts, I must admit! I have got 25mpg before on a long run.

The average therefore assuming 6000 miles per year for each car is 32.5mpg which ain't bad.

Jamie.

Scruffs got a point - it might be running too rich and just needs a tune. I think that you are right in the concerns though - 20 does sound low so worth getting it checked out (indie though).

The only issue being that a good tune (Motorvation?) will be £200 at least and thats quite a lot of fuel in the meantime.... your choice, but I would wait for the moment and give it a month. Then re-work it out and see. Then you will be able to justify the cost of the tune and see what happens from there....

It could be the grin-factor for the first few weeks of ownership....

Cheers,

Paul

Thanks everyone for the comments

I think I'll "suck it and see" for a bit then perhaps consider the tune...

...should the exhaust crackle and pop every time I take my foot off the gas ??? (even from 2500 rpm)

Cheers

Cheltenham posse seems to be in...

I'll get around 26mpg out of a 500 on my way to Cheltenham, but that's a steady speed run. "Er, I was making reasonable progress, officer."

But the consumption plummets as soon as the traffic gets grungy or I get too enthusiastic!

My unlovely Fiat Teapot, by contrast, does 38mpg, with me caning the nads off it. Suggest 500 quid's worth of italian trash might be the way to go for the majority of commuting? Mind you, I don't know where you commute from? But I'm managing Cambridgeshire to Cheltenham in the Fiat... (just about, anyway)

I've replied to aa "MPG" thread before but I can't find it. I get barely 15 for around town 22 ish for long runs

If you're doing a 40 mile trip and you think a tenner isn't good value for money (smiles per pound) take the train

Complaining about high fuel consumption and asking if the exhaust should crackle and pop! It would be interesting to hear what you thought a Chimaera was before you bought it !

Yes, and I have heard one with most of the exhaust removed - complete with a 4.6 tuned RPI lump.... in-laws live out Norfolk coast way (strangely not far from RPI!!). They are all mad and have serious Landies out there - including some major tuned SWB 3-door Discos with major noise....

They dont go that fast due to the trick gearboxes that they have fitted (for off roading), but boy that noise blows my TVR away.... Do like the idea of a spring Defender 90 with a tuned V8....

Cheers,

Paul

once you have got the car moving, just ease the right foot off, don't worry about what gear you are in, it's the pressure of the right foot that does the damage.
should be able to get 30mpg from a 4L. Is the car in tune properly?

I really dont think you are ever gona get mid to high twentys regardless how you drive, your forgetting its a v8 and pushing eight cylinders its always gona be high on fuel consumption.Spare a thought for me my every day transport is a 4.6 range rover and i get ( wait for it) 9mpg around town and 15mpg on a run, but as has previously been said with your car its not mpg but spg, keep your car and buy an old dog for work
