Got in the car this morning, started nicely and after a coupke if minutes warming up I tried to select reverse and only got a grinding sound.

Tried the other gears and couldn't get the leve to go into any of them. frown Seemed fine with the engine turned off.

Any ideas? Would the master/slave cylinders need topping up?

Not being all that mechanicalky minded, I did have a look to try and get that cover off under the bonnet, got the screws out, but fhe cover was well and truly stuck down.

Pissed off. frown

Carefully blade through the sealant..you will need to remove it all and re-seal it afterwards. A@

Sounds to me as if it needs more than just topping up frown

This true, the fluid is going to have gone somewhere...and if you top it up (as a get you moving) it will need to be looked at. A@

A leaky slave cylinder could have bled down the hydraulics a tad, should have evidence of it under the car if it has.
Does the clutch pedal feel normal, try pumping it a bit.
I had a new slave put in then after a few months noticed my pedal was slightly lower and gears were harder to get, made slightly easier by pumping pedal.
It was replaced and it’s been fine for over 4 years.

Well it does feel a little lighter than normal, and offers some resistance. Not all floppy the time it happened in my S.

Am hoping it's just fluid.

Maybe but, as has been said, it has to have gone somewhere. Either onto the floor under the car or is now in the carpet in your footwell.

Absolutely. Can't say I've noticed anything other than rain water in the footwell, so am assuming I've lost the fluid over the last couple of months.

I meant that hopefully it's only fluid in the sense that it can be topped up and actually moved. A new cylinder will be a must.

That cover is bit OTT though, am going to have to give that a go at removing at the weekend.

I changed my master cylinder recently because my peddle went totally floppy and the cylinder would not return to it's extended position. I never noticed any leaks until I changed the cylinder. It had leaked vertical behind (underneath) the carpets in the foot well and left a brown crunchy deposit and almost corroded them away. It was probably leaking for many months.
Worth doing a head stand in the drivers seat with a torch to have a good look.

By the way, changing the master cylinder is not as bad as many say, you just need to be a bit of the gymnast type.
