Have you considered using bituminous flash band tape to cover the gaps and basically seal the whole lot it? It can be cut away easily enough if needed?

I flicked the stones out ,cleaned the area and wax oiled .
Simple but it works .

These cut down floor mats have kept it pristine for years .

Great topic. Just happen to be doing mine on the SEAC at the moment.

A suggestion by Adam Quantrill on this topic was to create the replacement tubes and plates in stainless instead of mild steel.

Welding forums I frequent seem to think welding mild to stainless is ok.
