well as you lot are so helpfull, I wanted to know what your filling up on, as it says on my petrol cap , "only use super unleaded 98" I only know one garage that sells the stuff and they have been out of it lately and when they do have some its not a 24 hour garage, so I have used shell optimax as I keep getting caught short, it still seems to fly, and the garage obviously tells me its good fer the motor, so I was wonderin' what you lot reckon!

Hi Vinny,

I have to use 98 from the local BP as theres no shell optimax about.
Thing is i dont(touch me wood) seem to experience any running problems, been using 98 for 6 mnths now, putting in optimax accasionally when passing a station.
Some cars do experience not so good running if it aint used all the time.
How much difference did u really feel when using Optimax, i,d be a trifle worried if putting in one tank of Opti in and it made that much of a difference, like what sort odf damage must that other shit doing.

I always used Superlurp as Twink offically asks for Four star Leaded under her flap, but started used Optimax recently, and her charater has changed significantly.

I suspect its to do with flame front speed. The lurp has retardants (lead rep) which slooow the fire down, giving more low down torque, but limiting the top end power.

The unleaded but(am I right?) higher Octane Optimax burns quicker, so while she's peakier, the peak's worth having!

The actual power difference is probably marginal, even mostly phsycological, but it's there, and makes buying fuel more fun because you its almost like modding the car (god I'm sad).

I've had no pinking prob's with either, the ECU seems to cope admirably with anything I throw at it(more power to Honda..he he he). I'm sticking with Optimax for now, but from experience BP fuels are excellent too.

thanks again, I am using shell coz I cant get 98 (which is what TVR reccommend) but I must say that my car feels lighter and more responsive on optimax than on 98,so I think that that is what I'm gonna stick to . coz you gotta remember that optimax wasn't around when the chim was designed!

Vinny,....Shell Optimax is rated at RON 98+ so it is better than super unleaded which is often 97 RON.

I try and avoid putting anything other than Optimax in the car and I think it runs better on Optimax than anything else I've tried but it could all be in the mind.

The great advantage with Optimax is that it is usually cheaper than Super and yet it has a higher RON rating.

DM has your car been converted to take unleaded?

If it hasn't and your using Optimax I would be very cautious but you need advice from someone better qualified than me to answer your question.

In the back of my mind a little voice is telling me that running a leaded engine on unleaded is bad news!

It's a good point, but i'm pretty sure the valve seats are hardened in the d16 head...
... your're making me wonder now, eek

I've seen what happens to swiss cheese 'A' series Mini heads (Not mine I hassen to add).

Hope it not a prob' though the extra zip is fun. My (uneducated in this case) guess is that, when the car was built in '88, four star WAS the 97/98 octane fuel and unleaded was just the preserve of 2cv driving greenies (not a good car for them though, about as lean burning as a stuble field... he he he) hence the sticker on her flap. She craves the drink, not the ice...

...my kind of girl

Hi all,
I've only had my Chimaera 450 for a couple of months and the previous owner claimed that he had run it on normal unleaded fuel throughout (5 years) and so I have continued this.
Is anyone else running on standard unleaded?

taylor, I really think that optimax makes a differnce for the better and the above replies seems to confirm what I,m saying, (by opinion not authority) so now I'm gonna stick to optimax and suggest you try it for a while, I did notice a diffrence and I'm sure you wont be dissapointed, but if you are it was your decision, he he heh

But if Matthew's car was run on standard unleaded for 5 years then presumably the ignition system was adjusted to cope with that. Switching to Optimax or super unleaded might be expected to cause some performance disturbance necessitating a re-tune.

When I got mine I was told to use normal unleaded, which of course I did.
Curiosity got the better of me and I ran on Optimax for a while with no noticeable improvement. I did notice a distinct lack of pops and bangs, so I went right back to 95UL, pops, bangs & crackles all there and I'm a happy bunny,

Ok, define "proper car", and I may consider your sugestion.

As far as I'm concerned, a vehicle that looks cool and unusual and gets me and my stuff where I want go, when I want to go there IS a "proper car".

I'm not coming on here and slating your's, though on a lot of levels the cr-x knocks every TVR into a cocked hat, because frankly I love the things and for all their faults want one. I'm just not at point where I can afford one right now.

Sorry, I'm still tetchey over other beatings I've taken on here in the last few days...

I was told to use 95 when I bought mine (it also says only use 98 on the petrol cap). No problems with it so far, had the car 1 year.
