Just bought myself the TVR I have always wanted (baby Chimp 4.0). Need two bits of advice from you nutters out there :-)

Currently on a motor traders insurance but expiring soon, any advice on who insures these cars good and cheap - had a clean licence before owning a TVR and old enough to be accused of cradle snatching.

Would I be right in saying these cars are supposed to drink only the super unleaded? If not does it affect the performance.

Thanks
Ribol

1) A lot of owners use Optimax – try it to see if you can notice any difference – you'll have to try a few tankfuls though!

2) Insurance: I used Mannings. You'll find their number somewherer on here if you do a search for them or insurance threads.

Age 39 (was then). £15k 4.0 Chim – 415 Quid.
Garaged, out in the sticks etc.

Have fun

1) as already mentioned, try optimax. I have a 5ltr so super UL or Optimax is much preffered by my Beast. I have heard that the 4 ltr engine is quite hapy on normal UL though.

2) Also try Cheam Ins Brokers. They are now part of Hillhouse Hammond, but still come up with good quotes. Tescos are currently buying in business so doing good quotes - not track cover though.

One more thing, please dont refer to it as Chimp.

Chim or even quim I can cope with, but please not Chimp.

Matt.

Trying Optimax at the moment and it seems to be giving better fuel economy... this could be optimism on my part though

Fuel economy? You drive a V8 engined TVR and you actually watch it? I never took the risk of calculating it just in case.

Are any of the quotes below for limited mileages? Like others, I'm surprised by the quotes as I seem to be paying much more with no additional risk.

99 500 Griff for me and optimax a must. I use Sunninghill, old git at 42, £450. I did hear that Tesco will do track cover, i was told you have to speak to the "TVR man" for your quote. Of course the guy who told me maybe was dreaming.

How did you manage to get this insurance quote!! I have my 4.0HC Chim insured with classicline. 6 years no claims, no points, 5000 miles per year, 29 years old, '96 car valued at £16K for £700. I thought I was getting a good deal!

Perhaps getting to the ripe old age of 30 next month will have some advantages!

Jamie.

Ok, to recap, "chimp" is out, "chim" is acceptable and some of you are paying too much for insurance.

I have just spent a day cleaning and driving my new secondhand toy and am loving every minute of it!

Thanks all.

It must be the area i'm living in, and the wife is included on the policy as well.

Ladies and gents

It sounds to me that you are all getting a very good deal. I have a 97 Chim 4L and live in a particularly dodgy part of London (according to the insurance people ) and pay Mannings the Princely sum of 922.00 for 5000 miles SDP only with 4 yrs NCB 32yrs old and a Tracker Horizon

Forget the Insurance!! just start her up and listen, There now doesn't that feel better!!

Have only used Optimax and get 24 mpg, although I reckon the speedo overeads a bit.

Insurance is £400 with Mannings,no personal NCB as I have been driving company cars and personal insurance has been classic policies which don't count for bonus. 96 Griffith, 3000 miles and I'm 47 - does this make me the oldest "git" on here? Surely not!

Eh? I think youre right about the speedo but would that affect the odo aswell? I which case @ 10%, say, my 26,000 Chim has only done 23,500miles...albeit at an aveage of only 81mph not 90!

I reckon the odometer overeads too, I always seem to go further between A to B in the Griff ( and it's not because I can't stop driving it!). I would estimate that speed and distance are out by about 10%.

So my 37,500 miles is actually only 33,850? Good eh?
