I've just taken the car for a pre inspection at an independant tvr specialist and he recommended that i have the rear thrust washers fitted to the top wishbone as a precaution at the coming service.

They look easy enough to change yourself but was wandering how many are required and on which bush joints do they go on. If i took the rear shocks off and undid the top wishbone nuts and bolts would there be enough movement to fit these washers without taking the hub ball joint loose thus not needing a new wheel alignment check, as the nearest place that could do it is 60 miles away.

Any advice is gladly appreciated.

Does the car have the washers at the moment? Early cars didn't. If not, then you probably ought to replace the bushes at the same time = a bit more work. If the washers are already there then perhaps it is possible to do what you suggest, but I wouldn't have thought they would need replacing. I understood the bushes which 'go' most often are to top fronts (you can see them in the engine bay).

I have an early car and had all the bushes replaced with new items and thrust washers fitted as per newer cars to slow down the time it takes for the bushes to go again.

Sounds like a job you can leave until later anyway ... (IMO)

Thanks Trefor, The front have had the thrust washers fitted about 6 months before i bought it, but although the rear bushes aren't worn at present, i was advised to have them fitted on the rear top bushes to stop them from wearing under acceleration, at present there is no sign of wear i.e as i was told at a tvr dealer wear = brown like residue seeping from the bushes.
