Help, the ignition warning light stays on after the car has started? I assume it is the alternator, but want to know if there is anything cheaper work checking first as it would be typical for me to change the alternator only to find a 3.99 fuse is at fault.

Thanks

Nathan

I'm far from an expert but if the fan belt was loose then the alternator wouldn't charge properly, so suggest checking this first.

Cheers, I checked that this morning and the alternator is spinning, there is no sign of slippage. Any other ideas?

Even if it is your alternater at fault, someone will pop up soon telling you how to check , mine was 'only' £50ish to get reconditioned at a local autoelectrical specialist

just whack a volt meter across the alternator with the engine running nicely.. you should see 13-14v..
..if it isn't working you'll just get battery voltage of about 12v on the guage.

Cheers
Matt

PS ditto on reconditioning.. afterall its a standard part.

Forgot to say that the engine isn't running nicely - sounds as if it is missing, maybe the ecu is not getting enough power, or there is not enough power for the spark? I'll get out with a multimeter later. What ampage should I expect with not lights etc turned on?

Thanks

Nathan.. lumpy running could be all sorts of things has it been out in the rain, if so I'd start with the standard things.. check the plug leads, EM connectors etc etc.. you should still see something above engine voltage from the alternator even if its running rough afterall the alternator isn't too fussed as long as its spinning

If you do check for volts at the alternator & find nowt, there is a fusible link in the starter motor to alternator lead. It's in a black plastic housing (matchbox sized) underneath the o/s engine mount.

Was just going to suggest fuse link.

I had my alternator stripped out, was just going to order a new one when a guy at Walldonway said check the fuse link before I order it.
It turned out to be the link, about £1 to buy.

What may be an idea, this is what happened on mine, is if you have the car running, and wiggle the wire that leads into the black fuse box under the starter motor and have someone else see if the light goes out.

This is what me and my dad did and as the wire was wobbled the light went on and off, as the link made and broke contact.

The RAC came out this morning and did the multimeter thing (I haven't got one!) and couldn't get anything out of it (other than the 12v from the battery). He tried some percussive maintainance to free up the rotors (smacked it with a big hammer while the engine was running) and changed the regulator, still nothing. Could it still be this fuse link?

Could still be the fuse link, the electrics can do wierd things on these cars.

As I said I had the alternator stripped out of mine!!

See if you can get it up on ramps and have a look.
The fuse link box can be popped open and you can see straight away if the fuse is blown.

The fuse link looks like this.

The picture shows the old fuse which came out of mine.

There should be a meaty cable that comes in each end of the black box.

you really need to get it on ramps to change it.

I got the fuse and took it in to a local garage and got them to do it.

Hope this helps

surely if the fuse had blown, there would be 0 volts at the alternator not 12..?

Cheers

My dad is the tecchy person, he said that it went from 12v to 0v when you wobbled the lead.

Definately getting 12 volts (well 11.7 or something). I assume this means that the fuse is ok and I can get on with ordering an alternator?

Does anyone know where to get one or a refurbed one? Does anyone have the lucas or Bosch part numbers? (My car is at home so I cannot look).

Thanks for your help.

My Alternator is a Magnetti Marelli one, mine's a 98 Chim.

You can get recon ones from Halfords. TVR want about £220 for a recon one If I remember rightly.
