Chimaera 450 starting problem when hot (not hot start)
Discussion
Hi guys,
My beloved Chimaera seems to have developed a problem when trying to start when hot!
It has the hot start kit fitted.
When trying to start hot the engine spins over as fast as normal ,fuel pump kicks in ,but wont fire for about 15-20 seconds then with a bit more throttle it coughs and sputters then fires up!
Drives perfectly once running ,starts from cold instantly.
Any Ideas?

Check your plug colour and post a pic on here unless you want total guess work. Just take one plug out for now.
When was the electrical system last serviced so plugs Dist cap, rotor arm, ignition amp.
How olds the coil. When hot suggests a weak spark to my first instincts. If you have a spare coil just try that at first unless that’s also unknown. Coils tend to fail when hot but display a good spark when cold.

Thanks for that Alun.
Coil and amp were new chnged when i bought the car 5 years and 7000 miles so I think it may be worth getting new ones to eliminate them, the problem is where can you get units that you can trust, ever since the Chinese bought the Lucas brand name you can trust lucas units.
If I remember correctly the new units i bought were from a Landrover specialist ,i might try them again.
Are Bosch any good or any other ideas?
Car was serviced by Matt smith 500 miles ago, plugs were checked .cleaned and gapped Matt said they were 100% (NGK Iridiums).
Will pull one out later1

FWIW when I had tricky starts when my 450 was hot, (coincidently) Mat Smith diagnosed a dying ignition amp. It was the original on my then 19yr old car. Mat now has an ignition amp tester so can now bench test rather than road test. He recently "bench confirmed" a hesitation at 4500rpm when hot using a hot air gun etc.
I had some hot running issues where mine would not run well after engine was fully up to temperature. I fitted the plug 'spark testers' and could see that it was misfiring so replaced the coil and immediately issues disappeared.
That does sound like a typical ignition failure, so suggest get a genuine bosch unit from Eurocarparts.

With their discount its about £70 delivered and is genuine bosch part.
Sourcing a genuine good ignition amp is more difficult, although Rimmers do have Lucas units but are they any good ????

I’d change one thing at a time as the parts your buying may be worse than the ones your removing.
Lucas branded stuff is no longer what it used to be and I’ve read on here about some Bosch coils failing prematurely too.
It’s hard work these days finding decent quality parts, distributor doctor is supposed to be a good source for caps and rotors but prepare to pay for them.

So an Update!
New parts arrived, all genuine parts ,Bosch Coil, Magneti merrelli amp, Land rover branded Dizzy cap and rotor.
Replaced Cap and rotor first, evidence of arcing on one terminal where lead fits into, no signs of damage on rotor.
Then fitted coil and Amp ,note no transfer grease on amp ,new unit fitted with transfer compound .
Went for a nip around the block (31 Miles) engine much smoother and pulled better from low down in higher gears.
Once home left it for 15 minutes tried to start it and it fired up as quick as when its cold .
Tried it an hour later and started just as quick.
Thanks for the advice as always lads !
I am now going to book a visit to Jools for a 14CUX tune up session.

SOLD OUT now you guys must work fast either that or some greedy bd got the lot
well we know the parts suppliers monitor the forums for eagle eyed members who find and post about something useful, then jump on the bandwagon. What's the betting they will soon appear on a parts supplier website at a significant price hike?
One here if you are quick! I nabbed one.
